Fondant needs to be pliable enough, at least it should be, to be able to stretch a little so that when you smooth the fondant down the sides of the cake, the folds get smoothed away.
check out youtube for some videos on covering cakes with fondant and you'll see how they stretch the fondant just enough to get rid of the folds.
