I use it on cookies, but haven't tried it on cakes. There is a book you might want to look at. Decorating with Rolled Buttercream Icing by Marsha Winbeckler.
I was given the rolled Buttercream recipe by a friend, who said it was a fondant recipe. I loved the taste, so I tried it on a very tall cake, and it did not work well. It was very soft, and tore easily. I do love using it on cookies, because everyone loves the taste.
