Here is an FYI on a product I bought today, and why I bought it.

I am currently having trouble with my computer, and I just know it is going to have to go into the shop for a major clean-up or it will die. There have been several members of the forums I belong to who lost their information over the past few months. With all the paperwork I have had to do over the preceding year, I would end up losing more than I care to imagine.

I did not want to spend hours transferring all my data to discs, so I went to Staples with my son, the family computer wizard. He pointed out to me that the best way would be to buy a storage device.

I got the Maxtor One-Touch III, 60G version. I wish I would have gotten the bigger one now! It plugs into your USB port, creates a new drive, and then all you do is drop your file and wait for it to load. It is very easy to use.

Here is a link to the product information:

Staples currently has the version I bought on sale for about $60, including an instant rebate (no mail needed). My son bought the 100G version, for $100. These were the only two sizes available at the local store.

For the money, and the capacity that they are offering, it's worth the price. I saw a 6G for the same price as the one I bought, but mine holds 10X more information.

Sounds like a pretty good deal. I know that I hate backing up my computer, but since we got a virus on the last hard drive that we had I don't take any chances. I think I'm going to get one of those flash drives just for my pictures. I keep putting them on disks, but I want something that doesn't take up a lot of space.

or for those of us that have them..

burn files to CD or mutliple CDs.

I may a practice to do this time I leave for any vacation of more than 7 days -- so that's at least 2x/year. then I hide the CDs some odd place. (do this for reasons of: buglers, natural disasters, stupid computers)

and keep the old ones when I make new ones....this way, even if I decide I know longer need a file, then later realize that was a brain fart decision, I dig back and find the now needed again file.

I heard about his on NPR. For $50 year, while you are on the internet, they back up your computer continuously. They said that the guys who have this site are the only ones who have been able to do it and do it right. I plan on it in a few weeks, they back up EVERYTHING unless you mark it otherwise, it is secure, I HATE backing up stuff, hunting and pecking what I want, Im bad about it.

A member of one of the other forums send me a message telling me that OfficeMax online has a larger one for about $90 bucks.
