Icing Fruit ?

Well, I've been wanting a lighter strawberry cake & JanH suggested icing fruit. So, I stopped by my local cake store & bought some today. I just mixed up a white cake mix & added the recommended amt of 1 oz/ 2 lb of batter. Well, the batter still tasted like a white cake. Then I added 1 1/2 tsp strawberry flavor & it still tasted like white cake, then I added another 1/2 tsp of icing fruit. It had a slight taste of strawberry.

So, my question is for those of you who use it to use one batter (whether mix or scratch) and add the icing fruit to create a different flavor, do you add more than recommended? I am so wanting a good flavored cake, but not overly sweet or fake tasting.

Also, does it intensify or lose flavor after baking? I'm hoping to not have to make ANOTHER cake.
