I really like the taste of buttercream, but I'm not a huge fan of it with chocolate cake. Does anyone have any suggestions about the icing that best compliments chocolate cake? Maybe it's the chocolate cake that I don't like also. I use the devil's food box cake mix. Any REALLY good chocolate cake recipes also?
Thanks
Try the one on the back of the Hershey Cocoa box, SOOO good!! I have recently started using different flavored coffees in place of the hot water and subbed half of the milk for sour cream. VERY tasty!!
For frostings a good chocolate buttercream pairs well, I have one posted here:

And here's a peanutbutter fluff one that I whipped up recently:
1/2 c. softened salted butter
1/2 c. shortening
1 c. creamy peanut butter
16 oz. marshmallow fluff
2 tsp. vanilla extract
2-3 c. powdered sugar
3-5 tbs. half and half
Cream together butter and shortening first, add the pb, and cream that in. Add the fluff and vanilla and blend thoroughly. Slowly add the powdered sugar *to taste*, once it's the right amount of sweetness add in the half and half until the frosting looks smoother.
Here is what I do:
Chocolate buttercream
2c. crisco
1 stick butter softened
4 oz. cream cheese softened
2 lb. powder sugar minus 6 tbps.
6 tbps. cocoa
mix butter ,cream cheese, and cocoa
add powder sugar and crisco half at a time when all is added mix on medium for about five minutes

Have you tried making other flavors of buttercream besides vanilla and almond?
Orange bc is lovely with chocolate cake, as are peanut butter, mocha, coffee/espresso, caramel, raspberry, strawberry, mint, mint chocolate chip, chocolate chip, and of course, chocolate!
I (and my kids) prefer the milk cocolate cake mix over devils food. It seems to have a milder chocolate flavor. Ihave used the chocolate icing recipe on the inside of the Bakers baking chocolate box.
It may be the devil's food cake that you're not fond of. I don't really care for it. I prefer regular chocolate cake.
