What Type Of Cake Do You Make For Your Kids?

My seven year old son is an artist and has WAY more faith in me than I do....he draws me these elaborate, physically impossible designs and says "Can you make this???!?!?"
My three year old is into blue right now. Everything has to be blue. His clothes, his kool-aid, EVERYTHING. I'm looking forward to his blue birthday cake in May. Everyone will have blue teeth when they're done eating it!
I love Wizard of Oz, too, so hopefully when my daughter is a little older I'll get to make her a yellow brick road cake!
I've been talking to my 3 year old (soon to be 4!) about his cake today and I had to share! He is determined to have a Super Why cake. Is only request so far are that the cake is chocolate and that he can "eat the people."
Should I be disturbed? I know what he means though...he wants the people to be fondant. With the kids cakes I like to get little toys that go along with the theme...that way they get a present with their cake...but they don't even make Super Why! toys yet. So, I guess it's good that he wants them this way! I'm glad I have my sister to help on this one!!! She's an art education major and works with clay and paint all the time so she's not as scared of this project as I am!!
My kids get a party every 2 years ( too expensive otherwise ! ) Sometimes I surprise them with their cakes & sometimes they give me ideas ![]()
I couldn't wait to do girly cakes either ( after 4 boys ! ) - this year for my DDs' 4 th birthday, I'm doing a Tinkerbell cake ![]()
The cake in my avatar was for my 12 yr old son ( they usually just want chocolate cake too
)
My kid gets the most elaborate cake of all those I make. Planning begins months in advance. She helps pick, but she's only 5 so she's not much help. She has her parties "planned" for the next 10 years. Hah! "Next is a Strawberry Shortcake, then a Cinderella, then My Little Pony..." She actually remembers the order, though. I recently introduced her to Rainbow Brite and she is in LOVE! Perhaps I can sway her. In the end, its what I want to make anyways.
Her 1st party was elaborate, but every one since has been at a park or in our yard.
Oh come on... a sculpted bust of David Bowie would make for a cooooool cake.
*drool* Oh he was too cool in that movie! I think I was 13 when I first saw it, back in the days when the hot guys all had poofy long hair
lol-yeah, I asked my daughter what flavor she wanted and she also said vanilla! I agreed to do one tier in vanilla, the rest would be MY choice
It's so funny you say that! Everyone always wants to order yellow, white, chocolate or marble. Sometimes someone will order yellow ameretto. My oldest son's birthday is in April and I asked him if he's thought about his b'day cake yet. He threw out all these ideas: star wars, jaws, twilight, whatever. THEN he says "I KNOW want an exotic flavor! I want strawberry!" lol Strawberry is exotic!
My son will be 4 in April and he has now begun to have a better understanding of what he "wants". I wasn't making cakes when he turned 1 and just did two simple cakes from Wilton pans (Lightning McQueen & Elmo) for his 2nd because that's what he was into.
On his 3rd, I chose his favourite preschool tv program characters "Toopy & Binoo" and decided to challenge myself with modelling figures for the first time.
This year though, he's already planning what he wants LOL. He saw a pic on CC by RobzC8kz and says to me, "Mommy, can you make me that cake...but with Gordon cuz I'm gonna be 4?". So I guess this year I'm making a cake of Tidmouth Shed with Gordon from Thomas the Train. ![]()
As requested:
6 year old daughter--3d PB&J sandwich (with PB cake)
4 year old son--3d pirate ship w/ treasure, etc. (chocolate)
2 year old - 8" round with simple Barney on it. (chocolate)
husband - homemade coconut macaroons
20 yr old stepson- homemade strawberry shortcake
me-- this year "store bought" my bday is Xmas eve, but my husband offered to make me one from scratch!! I thought that was really nice.
vlin28--I just looked at your cakes. I am amazed that that was your first time modeling with fondant (on his 3rd). Awesome job!!!
tinygoose--You're cakes were incredible! PB&J is adorable! It's amazing the things kids think of!
My son is definitely more concerned with taste than fancy appearance. Unless he is having a party (which he didn't last week, his 16th birthday), he wants simple appearance. I made the Lemon Cooler (I think that's the name) cake from the Cake Mix Doctor, with lime instead of lemon. It was topped with fresh strawberries.
Other years, I have gone all out.
Thanks kilikina_24...I really appreciate you saying that! ![]()
