I have found that in some peoples' minds, cake-cutting is an honor to be bestowed that falls somewhere between bridesmaids and the hostess book-signy person! Seriously. There are some people who think getting involved with the wedding and helping in this way is a compliment.
Then there are those who are just looking to get out of paying the caterer's fee!
Me - I like hanging around the cake table and listening to all the compliments, but prefer to keep my hands clean and my back unkinked!!
My sisters did the cutting/serving of cake at my wedding (most Southern women I know around here do look on this task as an honor- the bride has entrusted them with something that is a huge part of her wedding). They had never done this before and were nervous. A lovely home-based baker did my cake and when we picked it up, the lady asked if experienced cutters would be dealing with the cake. When the answer was "no", she took a couple of minutes to pantomine the technique. Sisters were grateful, I was grateful, and the whole thing went like clockwork. Perhaps you could offer to show someone the best way to cut by doing the first few slices yourself and then turn it over to someone else?
