Stripes On A Cake

I have a Topsy Turvy Cake to do for the 29th December and the bottom layer is stripes vertical. Can anyone explain how I would go about doing the stripes and how they taper when on the top. I have 4 colours to do and the larger one is white then I have lemon yellow and beige. Hoping someone out there has some tips. Thanks
