I cut a piece of freezer paper the same size as the coat was to be. Then, folded it in half(to give me a line to help me with balance) and sketched the details on the dull side. When I was content with the look of it, I placed the shiny side against the cake to mark for placement. I made a duplicate of the original sketch to use as pattern pieces. Cut all the pieces from fondant and placed them where marked. If you don't want to use fondant, use the marked areas as guideline to build up areas for dimension.
