How Do You Cut Foam Board With A Clean Finish?

I use a 'hot knife' that I got from Michael's....it's made by Walnut Hollow, I think.........it works WONDERFULLY! If you don't have access to that, you can use an exacto knife, a craft knife. HTH. ![]()
I'm like you, I just can't seem to get a clean finish, especially on the 1/2" rounds. My husband was doing it for me, and they were turning out bad, so i tried to do it myself, and it turned out bad.
I thnk my problem is that I am not using the exacto up and down, instead cutting at a slant. I hope that's what it is anyway. I have gone to plates for my round cakes right now.
We have discussed using the 1/4" foamcore and gluing them together.
I use this little device (you can usually find it at an office supplies store (e.g. Staples, etc...)):

It sits flat on the foamcore so it cuts a nice 90 deg angle. I find it easiest to first score the foamcore with the blade protruding just a bit. Then set the blade to the depth of the foamcore and and follow your scored line (make sure the device is flat against the board).
Well, I've never tried to cut a circle, so I'm no help there...but when I just cut my foamcore board in half and I want to get rid of the jagged edges, here's what I do. I don't know if it's the "right" thing to do, but it works for me...
I purchased a nail file...the one that's like a board, not the metal kind...it's about 1"x10"...and I dedicated it to this purpose only. I just take it and gently file the edge of the board that I cut...it works perfectly every time....no more jagged edges.
