Toba Garretts fondant, which is on this website. I swear by it. It is quick to make and yummy, yummy, yummy. I put in vanilla extract for the extract (I think she recommends orange or something).
I guess if you are into doing hobby cakes, than Wilton works. But, in all honesty, what hobbiest is going to get into the flowers, fondant and gumpaste? I guess they might.
I get a LOT of my fondant tools from the clay section. Hehehe. Works for me. I guess I am just annoyed that they sell stuff that obviously doesn't work. Take the time to make it work, for crying out loud. But, they are good marketters and they are raking in the dough (as in dollars) icon_smile.gif Still frustrating, though...

Even though I only do cakes for friends and family I consider myself more of a hobbiest. I doubt I will ever turn cakes into a living because I don't really like doing wedding cakes. But that doesn't mean I don't want to learn all the flowers I can, or use fondant and gumpaste. Why should a hobbiest be only limited to buttercream?

My SIL LOVES Wilton's fondant. To me it doesn't taste nasty, it just tastes sweet. And my family's issue with it on cakes isn't taste but texture.

I have both the cake levelers and haven't had any problems using them myself.

Sure there are some things that could be better made or aren't worth the cost. But I wouldn't put down Wilton in general because of a few bad products. I don't think they are the only company that has ever produced something that would have been rethought or the design left on the floor in the design room.

Personally I'm a try it out myself person. Because I know that while others may not like something, I sometimes find that I do.

So obviously you are a MAC user and not a PC user!!! icon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gificon_cry.gificon_cry.gif
Oh, My, Word... THAT was too funny!!!

Okay, now that I've had my funny for the night... I have to agree. There are a lot of things that they do well. I don't have a sheeter. I want one, but I don't have one. so for me the little ring things that you put on your pin is AWESOME!!! And so on. Bake even strips... I haven't noticed another brand...

So despite some of their things being total crap... Some of their thier things ARE good... And really, look at who they are marketing to!!! Certainly not industrial people!!! But if you see someone picking up the large leveler... Be a love and tell them DON"T DO IT!!!!!!

I used the large leveler for years before getting my Agbay. Learn how to use it! I never had any problems with it. And I never cut myself on my Wilton leveler now with the Agbay I almost cut my finger off. There is always better products for any craft there is. Without Wilton most of us wouldn't be here!
Think about how many started with Wilton. Thank god they had classes and product to buy when there wasn't anyone or anything else to buy.
Do you complain about grocery store products too? If you dont like it then dont buy it!

You got me there, psurrette! If I hadn't taken the Wilton classes, I would not have a fun job/extreme hobby now.
Texas - I didn't mean to insult you. When I think of a hobbiest I think of someone who makes cakes for their kids birthdays and that's about it. I guess that is not really a hobbiest, though, is it?
~sigh~ I guess I have to get over myself and just deal with the fact that I have to spend more money on better products. icon_cry.gif

I have to agree with what she said - except I haven't cut myself on my Agbay yet, and hope I never do, lol.

But, like many have said, where would we all be without Wilton? I own almost the entire Wilton aisle, and yes, there are items I wouldn't buy again, and some I've given away to friends when I've bought better ones (ex: the large leveler - I too hated it). But, it's a place to start, and doesn't require a HUGE investment of money to see if it's something you like doing.

I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one who owns the large leveler & doesn't have problems with it. I will admit that the very first time I used it I had an issue with it, but only b/c I wasn't used to it. After that though I have done just fine with it.
