My Cakes Prove The Laws Of Gravity

I do not decorate cakes professionally. Most of the cakes I do are for friends. That has turned out to be a good thing, because friends tend to be a little more forgiving when there is a problem with a cake.
I've had three disasters with falling cakes.
The first one, I had been up until 3 am, making a hockey arena, complete with little hand made nets that I had sewn by hand.
As I was walking out the door with it the next morning, I didn't see the butter wrapper that a raccoon had caused to fall out of the garbage the night before.
I slipped, and hit every step on the way down, while I tried in vain to protect my hard work.
Sadly, I ended up on the ground at the bottom, with my cake upside down on the ground.
I was on my way to my actual job, and had no time to do anything before 5 pm that evening, which is when my friend was coming to my workplace to pick up the cake. I had to quickly call the local bakery, and arrange for someone to go and pick up a replacement cake, which I paid for.
I gave it to my friend for free, but they were very disappointed in it. Her son said, "It's not one of her cakes."
The second one, I had done a cake for a staff party. I had baked the cake with pure rum in it, so it wasn't a cheap cake by any means. I had recreated the company logo on top, and I was very proud of it.
I brought it in the door, and one of my co-workers, who had been drinking just a little too much already, grabbed the cake and started showing it around to everyone. All of a sudden the cake tipped out of her hands and ended upside down on a heating grate.
She kept apologizing, but I was pretty much ready to kill her.
We tried to clean up as much of the damaged cake as we could, but the place smelled of burnt cake and icing for the rest of the night because of the pieces that had fallen through into the furnace pipe below.
My third disaster was for another friend. It was her little boy's first birthday, and he wanted a Blue's Clues cake. I was pretty proud of my work, and luckily, I got one picture of it. When I went to step out of the car with the cake in my hand, it teetered a little, and I reflexively reached to grab it, ending up shoving my hand right into poor Blue's face.
They were OK with it, because Blue was still slightly recognizable.
I guess 3 accidents out of a few hundred cakes over the past 20 years or so is a pretty good average. ![]()

Ha ha! This sounds exactly like something I would do! I am kind of a clutz and it seems that when it comes to crunch time and cooking my body and my brain don't stay connected.. lol... and somehow something always ends up somewhere that it shouldn't be.
One time I was mixing some icing at my mom's ( I was unfamiliar with her mixer), after I got it going I left the room for a second... and suddenly I heard it going crazy in the kitchen... by the time I got there the icing was all over the kitchen (literally)
My mom then informed me that I had put the beaters in wrong... ha ha... so instead of keeping everything in the bowl they were spewing it all over the walls and the floor... ha ha... we had a good laugh about that one. I don't think she minded too much because I can't count the amount of times I came down to her laughing and holding my families white clothes that she had just turned pink. ![]()
I can totally relate. In fact, I talk to myself as I'm baking, because I'm constantly amazed at my own klutziness. "How do you DO this stuff, Missy?"
Yesterday:
- set down a bowl of white icing on the counter.
- fork on counter with red Americolor on it
- bowl hits fork tines, fork flips neatly through the air (cartoonlike) and lands perfectly in the center of the white icing.
What can you do except laugh? It was a perfect Klutz moment.
I know, not so funny when a cake goes flying. But I've accepted that "It's Going to Happen To Me", so I better get used to it.
The pink icing actually looked kinda nice. ![]()

Hey I would say that is a great average!!! I worry every time I am even near a cake that I am going to drop it. I am due for it to happen. lol. I like your average 20 years from now i hope that is all i have let hit the floor. Oh and that coworker
. I hope she made it up to you.
