I don't know where you live, but if it's in the US, very few people would like a fondant covered cake that doesn't have buttercream, or perhaps chocolate ganache, under the fondant. Americans just don't like to chew their icing
and jam just wouldn't cut it--sorry.
On a fruitcake in the UK, a layer of marzipan is usually put under the fondant.

Anyway, you can use IMBC or SMBC under fondant also.....although I never have.
