What To Use Instead Of Buttercream?

Do I have to frost my cake with buttercream when I am laying fondant? Or can I use other frostings? Any favorites?

I'm sure it doesn't have to be buttercream. I have seen some using Jam on the cake, before putting fondant. icon_smile.gif

Yes you can coat it with your favorite jam then put the fondant on it.

I don't know where you live, but if it's in the US, very few people would like a fondant covered cake that doesn't have buttercream, or perhaps chocolate ganache, under the fondant. Americans just don't like to chew their icing icon_wink.gif and jam just wouldn't cut it--sorry.

On a fruitcake in the UK, a layer of marzipan is usually put under the fondant.

Anyway, you can use IMBC or SMBC under fondant also.....although I never have.
