Not sure if it helps at all, but could you use a basic buttercream that has milk/cream in it and add coffee syrup to it or flavor?

Bring to a rapid boil, then decrease to a slow boil about an hour. Cool and add 2 tbsp vanilla.
2 cups sugar
1/3 cup instant coffee
pinch salt
1.5 cups water

I use this as my base for homemade coffee liqueur and found it is great in buttercream!

If you find what you are looking for be sure to post about it! I love coffee-flavors and those cupcakes sound great!

Well coming from Miami and pretty much having a cafe con leche every morning to start off the da, I would say that whatever flavoring you add to your buttercream, substitute it with cuban coffee. That's what I would do. Sounds so good.
