I think the simplest way to make a cupcake look great is roll some fondant with one of the patterned rolling pins, cut a circle to the size of the cuppy and just lay it on top, it really looks nice icon_smile.gif , a fellow CC'er was recently on TV showing this method, heres the thread with the clip:-
