If you want to paint on fondant, use paste food colors thinned with vodka. You can also mix the different kinds of dusts with vodka...wilton has more colors than they used to, and you can get them at Michael's.
I just met Norman Davis at the ICES convention and we had this discussion about painting on fondant. I have trouble getting the gold luster dust or any gold to my liking on the cake. He said he prefers Lemon extract to use instead of vodka.
I have never tryed to paint on BC - have done a little brush embroidery but that is it.
I find painting on fondant is also easier if you let the fondant dry overnight before painting on it.
