I just got a request today for a pistol or shooting range cake for a co-worker's hubby's B-Day. I have looked at pics on cakecentral and wilton, but not a lot of choices. She would like it to be a 3-d pistol and I just don't know if I can do it without it looking like a cartoon. I have thought about stacking, filling, freezing and then carving it. And maybe using the airbrush cans for decorating? Although I have never used those either. Any sugguestions would be greatly helpful...of course she needs it by Friday so that doesn't give me long.

Thanks so much,

I found this pic and it looks the best 'simplest' gun, this one is all one colour though, I think if you made a large round with a white and red target with the 3D gun on top it would look really good! icon_smile.gif You could do all BC or make the gun out of fondant but I think it looks good out of BC with the detail piped on.
Just a thought! icon_biggrin.gif

The majority of handguns are all black or black and stainless steel. There are a few with colors (green, desert camo, desert tan being the most common) but you really can't go wrong with black. A semi-auto would likely be easier to do than a revolver (color and shape wise!) The gun in the pp's link is an example of a semi auto.

Targets used at ranges are often silhouette targets. If you google that phrase you will see a bunch of options. Bullets wouldn't be too difficult to shape out of fondant and you could paint them with luster dust or something. Other shooting accessories are safety glasses, ear muffs and magazines for the handgun.

A simple silhouette target with a handgun on top and a couple of bullets would say "range shooting".

I'm not very good at cakes yet but I do like to go shooting! icon_biggrin.gif

My husband (who loves cakes and guns icon_lol.gif ) said that a glock is the absolute simplest gun because it's so plain. He liked the idea of a gun cake so much that he found a good picture of a glock (something tells me he's going to be making one out of fondant in the next few days icon_biggrin.gif )

To keep it from looking cartoonish, you could make a life-size gun out of fondant, or fondant and RKT, and put it on top of a target cake. The targets that we usually use are just square sheets of paper with some circles printed on them. You could make a few fondant bullets too and paint them with a metallic dust. To keep it all simple, I'd do a white cake, red lines for the targets (although all the ones I've used have just been black, I think the red would add visual appeal) and then a few bullets lying next to a black gun.
