Hi Everyone..

I am looking for some tips/advice on carving cakes whimsical style.. that's the only way I know how to describe it. LOL Not tilted/topsy turvy.. but where the top part of the cake is wider than the bottom...

here's a link to one in the gallery...

I am afraid I won't carve evenly.... cut too much off one side than the other, etc... what's the secret?

Thanks!!! icon_biggrin.gif

I find it easiest to use cake pans that are only 1in different in size. I did one for today that is 6, 5, 4 for the top and 8, 7, 6 for the bottom. That way all you are really doing is slightly cutting of the edges.

I would say just do it.

Couple of things to remember
1. use a dense sturdy cake
2. keep the slant minimum cause you don't want that top edge to fall off
3. Ice upside down, it will be easier to handle, whether you are using fondant or buttercream.

I don't think it really matters if it is perfectly even, but if i am making a cake like this. I stack and fill my layers, then place a cardboard the size i want the top on one side and the size i want the bottom on the otherside. then use the cardboard as a guide for cutting.

Thanks so much!! That was a big help! I was thinking the cardboard too for a guide and love the one-inch difference idea.. never even occurred to me to do that. LOL Thanks! We'll see how it goes!
