Is MMF strong enough to make flowers and bows and such? Does it take along time to dry?
With our humidity, I'm scared to try it BigEasyCakes... MMF tends to fall when humidity hits it .. maybe some others have tried it with better luck ![]()
I used it for a bow this week, let it air dry 24 hours, and it kept on drooping for me. It was very humid that day. Does gumpaste do better?
Yes, gumpaste would work much better for bows. ![]()
is mmf and gumpaste and fondant very similar when working with it???
Also what is the taste with them?
Okay, I want to attempt to make a box top and small bow this weekend for my upcoming baby shower cake I'm making. I bought a can of gum tex to add to my MMF. I don't know the difference between gum paste, gum tex, sugar paste, and fondant...If I use MMF with gum tex added, how do I mix it into the MMF - after I have a doughy consistency with the MMF and then mix in a couple teaspoons of the gum tex? - OR, should I just use Wilton's fondant with gum tex added? Again, at what point in the process do I add in the gum tex?
I bought the Wilton's gumpaste mix ($4.99) to make my bows. It was very easy to mix and use, and dried up very nice for my loops on the bow. I also used crisco on my mat and roller this time like some suggested and it worked very well. Just thought I would share.
MMF is no different than any other fondant. It is too soft to maintain the shape of bow loops, etc. If you knead in cornstarch the fondant will dry just as hard as gumpaste. The suggestion has always been to do a 50-50 mix of fondant and gumpaste; or knead in Tylose (CMC). But trust me, kneading in cornstarch will dry the fondant equally as well, and is much cheaper. How much? That depends on what effect you're going for, and the humidity. I made a cat out of black fondant (with cornstarch added) and it was dry the next morning. It's hard as a rock now.
As an extra tip--when your fondant is too dry, just knead in a bit of shortening. It will be soft and pliable again.
wow, thanks for the help on this. i'll be trying this out this weekend.
you know, this is somewhat off the subject but sharon at "sharon's sugar shack" has one of the best websites in the world!!! and her cakes are soooo awesome! i am just blown away at the the detail and perfection of her cakes...some of you may not be as excited about it but let me tell you, she can make fondant look like it's nothing to work with!! here is the website: http://hometown.aol.com/szcakes/myhomepage/index.html

I emailed Sharon (the lady from the website) to see if she and her family were okay. I couldn't help but thinking about her because she had been so kind to answer a how-to question regarding one of her cakes. I mean, she was quick to answer when I contacted her through her website, and said anytime, that is how she learned because so many people shared their own tips and instructions with her. Anyway, she replied to my email after the hurricane and said that she and her family were well. They lived just north on the outskirts of New Orleans and didn't get too much flooding.
As for me, I wasn't in the path of the hurricane. I am about 2-3 hours straight north of Mobile, AL. I have one cousin that lost her home to the flooding in New Orleans. She evacuated before the storm and is staying here in Alabama as well.
