Tiptop57 - art classes were just a suggestion. I agree on searching for the right books more so than following some societal institution. Dont get me wrong - I've got the degrees which is probably the reason for the way I feel. Your suggestions for books are fantastic.

Petit-four - I'm still developing my niche. On the hunt for things that are not mainstream. I'm not really one to follow the beaten path - so much still to learn.
Also, Lorijom got me thinking... you collect older books too right? Any goodies?

I have an old Australian book called "Cake Icing and Decorating" by Jean Bowring. It doesn't have a publication date but looks like sometime in the 1950's since there are a few colored pics in it. It has some great australian techniques but mostly it's so fun for the "hostess" instructions like this - kidney potato cakes...make of sponge cake, almond paste, jam, shaped like potato's rolled in cocoa powder with almond slivers added as potato eyes icon_lol.gif

I love to read thru these old books....some for fun, others for great recipes that are still relevant today.

Imagine my surprise when I found this same book mentioned in an article recently:
