So, my daughters first b-day is Jan 19th and I had the perfect cake in mind to make. Two tiered stacked cake with the top tier being marked with a diamond impression mat. The problem is now I can't get a hold of one soon enough. The cake supply stores here don't have them and i was a little taken aback when I found out that ordering one online would more than triple the price of the darn thing!!!! So, now I don't know how to do her cake and if I should come up with something totally different. Does anyone have any great ideas for a Queen for a Day cake????I bought the Tiara already (although I am still going to try making it in chocolate with the template) Any help would be sooooo great!!!

Take a piece of cardboard and cut a right triangle that is as high as the tier to be decorated. (4" cake, make the triangle 4" high). Put the cake on a flat surface. Place the triangle on the side of the cake and using the back of a knife or even a bench scraper or spatula, make a diagonal line on the cake using the slanted side of the triangle as a guide. Do this all the way around the cake, turn the triangle around and do the same thing going the opposite direction making the diamond pattern on the side of the cake.

Huh....how interesting. I may have to practice with that method. It certainly helps when you can improvise! Hopefully I will be getting an impression mat soon! icon_biggrin.gif

How about a pillow cake for the top tier, with the tiara on top of the pillow?

Yes, I was going to suggest making your own diamond template and use as a guide to mark the design onto your cake or if using fondant, you could cut the diamonds by hand and place on cake. If you could find a diamond shaped cookie cutter (if any of the local stores in your area sell them) that would even be another quick solution.
