I'm getting excited!
I will be making my first fondant cake this weekend! The main (cut out) design will be in yellow for the top of the cake. I need to detail it in black. I purchased a tube of decorating icing since it is just a small amount I will be using. Is it okay to pipe black icing onto yellow fondant...or will it bleed into it? Any replies and tips are greatly appreciated! Thanks
I don't know the answer to your question I just wanted to say good luck and have fun with your cake! I made my first fondant cakes over Christmas and I made the MMF myself. I think I made about 6 different batches and whew! I was sweating! But it was a lot of fun! I haven't used black icing yet. Hopefully someone one here knows. I'd like to know myself! ![]()
How long does it generally take to make one batch? Sounds like alot of trial and error from all of the recipes and comments that I've read. And alot of kneading...I bet your hands and arms were worn out! Did all of yours turn out well? Is it hard to get right at first? I plan on making 2 batches and need both of them (I think) for the cake so I hope they both turn out good. BTW, isn't this site great? I love it. Everyone is so helpful, very friendly. I've already gathered alot of useful information...now to apply it!
R U Kidding!! I am a freak about this site!!!!!!!! I just started in late December here and i have over 150 posts I think!!!! Im nuts about it.
Anyhoo, hehehe!! The first day I tried MMF I was of course scared because it seems like a lot. But after the first time you will learn immediately what to do the next time. So, the next time I made it I felt totally comfortable! I just melted the marshmallows in a double boiler then added 3/4 bag of powdersugar in the bowl. Kneaded it with a couple of spoons for a second until the marshmallows cooled down. Then on a crisco coverd counter top you just plop it all down then put crisco all over your hands and start kneading! You will need to add water probably. i do it a tablespoon at a time. Maybe twice or so. Then once you get most of the sugar in the ball you just knead for 8 minutes. I don't start the 8 min timer until it looks pretty incorporated. You will totally notice at the 8 minute mark how different it looks and feels and your arms will be killing you!!! I was trying to get my Dh to do it for me but he wouldn't!!! The first night I made mine I used it immediately, even though the recipe I had said to let it sit over night. It worked fine but the next time I made it I covered it in crisco, then wrapped in saran wrap, then I put it in a ziplock bag, then in a plastic container! then I let it sit overnight. When I used it the next night I popped it in the microwave for 20seconds and it was sooooo much softer to work with. So, I say if you have the time....make it then put it away for a night then use it the next day or whenever you need it. The microwave softens it up perfectly. When you are working with it, making decorations and such if it becomes hard just pop it in for a few seconds to get warm and it will go elastic again and much easier to work with! I think I just talked your ear completely off!!! Good luck and i can't wait to see pics!!!!!!!!!! As you can see in my photos I only have 3 fondant cakes but they were my first and i am proud of how well they turned out! You will like making it! I felt crafty!
I just made my first batch of MMF in December. It wasn't nearly as hard as I thought it would be. I haven't covered a cake with it yet though. I've been keeping it in a zip lock bag and then pinch off what I need to make small decorations. I plan on using the rest of this batch to put a bow on a birthday cake for my DD's upcoming birthday.
I've said this before and I'll say again, "although I don't post very often I read it nearly everyday and I just love this site". Thank you all for being so informative and helpful! ![]()
I'm not sure about your question. I think I would maybe try it on a small piece before I did it on the cake. I haven't used fondant yet but I have been hearing so many good things about it and it looks so good on the cakes I am fixin to talk myself right into it. I don't really know how well fondant covered cakes will go over in my neck of the woods. Most of the folks around here are pretty loyal to their buttercream. And they already have their minds made up that they don't like the fondant. I think they have had some of the old timey fondant and not the MMF. Sometimes I feel so limited with just BC. I have been looking at the cakes with fondant and gumpaste decorations and I am about to take the plunge. My DIL's baby shower is in a couple of weeks and I am going to do the cake. I want to make the gumpaste booties. I have ordered the cutter and it should be here this week. I know there was a pattern on CC but I was having trouble getting it to print. Anyway best of luck on your cake this weekend and I will be checking back for pics.
I totally get that, I felt the same way about my area too. But like you, all the pics of so many gorgeous cakes just would not get out of my head...I had to do it or drive myself crazy thinking about it! lol
I made my first two batches today! You were so right about it coming together the second time. My colors turned out really well and I just hope that everything else will work out tomorrow! I was so surprised at how good it tastes! My youngest DD was surprised too. (she's 18 months old) the look on her face was priceless when I popped a little piece into her mouth. ![]()
I was going to order Luster Dust for the cake, but just didn't take the time. My mmf on my cake had alot of bubbles and a few cracks...maybe needed more shortening? But all in all not too bad for a first time one...I guess. I had no cut out for the main decoration for the top and had to cut by hand. It look a little rough. Tried to get it evened up but couldn't make much progress. For all the work of fondant, buttercream is smooth enough! lol. If I have to have fondant I will probably just order some Satin Ice. The MMF is good, but nothing beats buttercream IMO.
