I'll be making an airplane cake soon and I was wondering what the best thing to make wings would be?

Sugar cookie covered in royal? I estimate each wing will be 5 inches long (so I was going to make a large cookie to be both wings, sandwiched in between cake layers...

Any other tips on making an airplane??

On my Thunderbird space ship cake I used gumpaste wings. I made them a couple of days ahead to make sure they were really dry so they would not sag. I sandwiched a couple of toothpicks into each wing so they would attach to the body of the space ship. There is a picture of it in my photos if you want to see.

If fairly small I'd use Mexican paste. If larger, either cakeboard or foamcore covered with fondant.
