Hello. My name is Cristine and I have lurked at this site for a while now, but am coming out of lurkdom to ask some questions. I hope that is okay!

I have been doing cakes for a while, but always with buttercream. For my daugthers 2nd birthday, I am wanting to try MMF. I am doing a test cake in February and was wondering what tools I need to do a cake in fondant. Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks so much!!!

Welcome!!! If you have already been lurking, then you know how addicting this site is! icon_lol.gif

Tools for fondant, well, get your recipe for starters and then start off slow so that you do not overwhelm your self. For the basic covering of a cake, you will just need a rolling pin, a mat to roll out the fondant, shortening or confectioner sugar or cornstarch and a good sharp knife.

Take a look at the article here on how to make and cover your cake in MMF: http://www.cakecentral.com/article47-How-to-Make-and-Decorate-with-Marshmallow-Fondant-MMF.html Wilton has instructions as well for covering a cake: http://www.wilton.com/wedding/makecake/fondant/index.cfm

That is the basic. After that there are so many toys out there to help you decorate--it is just figuring out what you want to do and then finding the right tool.

HTH in some way and good luck!

Thanks for the reply. I was thinking about doing a bow or something on top... I haven't quite decided. icon_smile.gif Is the fondant consistency the same for the bows or decorations as it is for covering the cake?

For making bows, it is actually best to add gum-tex to the fondant or mix a 50/50 blend of fondant and gumpaste. Doing either one of those will help the bow dry harder and faster.

If you are just putting fondant accents on the cake, you can use just plain fondant.

You could use a pizza cutter instead of a knife.
