Probably already answered somewhere, but was just wondering how to keep your fondant from drying out or getting hard while working with it?
ok since no one answered that one yet how about if I add this one on as well .. my fondant colored black is very sticky .. would I put in crisco or cornstarch? also since Im on a question roll is it ok for people to eat luster dust? this is probably a crazy question but I have never used it before and want to try to accent some areas on my dragon cake ... hello .. anyone ...
To keep fondant from drying out I wrap it in plastic wrap, put it in a zip lock bag then in an air tight container. What kind of fondant are you using? Did it get sticky after you colored it? If so it might have too much moisture in it and I would add a little powdered sugar to it.
ok thanks you guys! here is the situation ... I colored wilton white fondant with americolor super red .. I rolled out rather thin and punched out scales for my dragon .. in the meantime it got hard so we wrapped it in saran wrap .. the other half of the wilton white fondant I colored with americolor super black .. it is VERY sticky .. I should put powdered sugar in it to dry it up?
In reference to 2nd post:
If its sticky, I'd knead in powdered sugar.
ShirleyW doesn't recommend eating luster dust. They are labeled non-toxic but since they are metallic, err on the side of caution. I'm sure some eat LD, I know I've eaten chocolate decorations with LD on them.
Hope this helps.
fmandds, I dont understand your question? about the poster? ![]()
Oh, don't be embarrassed. You'll make me feel embarrassed. I can't remember know who the poster(member) was that had an Uncle(I think) ask for the price on a dragon cake, but the price was to high so then it went down to a sheet cake for $35, but then the Uncle called back saying they didn't care about price, they just wanted the dragon. Of course all this was after he asked for a different kind of icing, which they had to go out and buy. Anywoo..I was just wondering if you are that person? Ya know, just trying to remember all the members here and their stories. ![]()
yes that was me .. I guess I was thinking "poster" like what hangs on a wall .. but I did sell the dragon cake to my uncle for 50.00$ and then when he saw it he actually gave me an additional 25.00$! ![]()
While I'm working with a portion of fondant, I place a glass upside down over the remaining fondant. Then, when I need more, I just lift the glass. When I'm working with really large portions, or lots of colors, I'll cover the unused portion with a plastic container.
Re: sticky black and red. Even the pre-colored stuff I buy is sticky because of all the color that has to be added. Just dust with cornstarch to keep it from sticking to your surfaces. Blot your cutters on your cornstarch puff. The white cornstarch rubs right off. I wouldn't knead anything into the fondant as that might compromise the texture or make it dry out faster.

BTW, the cake is great! Glad he gave you a little extra for your time and effort.
