Wedding Cake..should I Do It?? Please Help!

Hi everyone,
I have a little dilemma. I have been asked to do a castle wedding cake for Dec. 07. I have never done a wedding cake, or a castle cake, and I'm not really sure if I can do it or not.
But I really want to. I feel like I have a year to practice and figure it out, but I'm also worried I won't be able to pull it off. I don't know any details she just left a message on my answering machine.
So please help me! Really what do you all think? Also, if you do think I should do it what questions should I ask her when I call back? I feel like with all of you to help me out and also I'll be taking another class with Kim Morrison that I might be able to do it, but like I said I've never done one before and so you guys would be able to tell me if I'm being unrealistic! Thanks again for all of your help!-Alison
First - your cakes are beautiful, so I'm sure that you can do it!
You do have a year to practice whatever design you and the bride come up with so the stress of a last minute cake is off. They also have styrofoam castle cake toppers that can be painted so that would/could take the pressure of doing a castle off as well.
I'm sure that you'll do a great job! Take the job if your comfortable with it and have fun - there's lots of time to practice.
Accept the order and run with it!!! You have a whole year to pull it off and who knows, you'll probably even do another wedding cake or two inbetween!
Thanks so much getfrosted! I really appreciate your response. I was just looking around and did see that some castle wedding cakes have the castle being the topper. I didn't realize you can buy them in styrofoam. That could make it a lot easier. I guess I could do it and show them some ideas that I think I could do and hope they don't want an extravagant castle
Thanks again!!
Opps - I forgot to add.... I know that you may be doubting yourself but I'm sure the cake will turn out beautiful. Remember, DO NOT under price yourself and your beautfiul work of art just because your doubting yourself!
(I'm saying this because I always do it - so I make myself feel better about it by reminding others NOT to do it.. haha!)
Well you want us to be honest so here it goes! I took a look at your cakes to see what I thought of your work. This is what I found:
Your icing is very smooth.
Your flowers are lovely.
Your color matching is great.
Your gumpaste and fondant work is divine.
Your cakes are all very pretty.
So with all that talent I have no doubt that will you be able to do the cake. Looks like when you put your mind to it you can do anything. Go for it! ![]()
You Can Do It! Every time we take on a challenge, we expand our skills and overcome our fears. What a great way to learn something knew. I remember a similar situation when I first opened my flower shop. I was right across the street from a funeral home. I had never done family pieces for on the caskets and I was afraid. So I decided I just wouldn't do those particular pieces. Well, my husband laughed at me and said "How can you be across the street from a funeral home and NOT make the main arrangements for the services?" Anyway, one week after I opened, I had a customer who requested a "lidspray" for on top of the casket. I was terrified, but I took on the challenge. It took me five hours to make it. She was very pleased because it was custom made with special features that she had requested in memory of her late husband. And away I went...lidsprays now only take 1.5 hours and I love it when my customers request something different. I also have been afraid to do a couple of different cakes, but I look forward to challenging myself and creating things that my customers rave about....because when they rave, your business grows! I say "Do It...you have lots of time to brainstorm and practice. P. S. Happy Early Birthday!

Honey if you can make a Prada shoe out of gumpaste you can do ANYTHING!!! Go for it!!! ![]()
And, if you are doing any "freebies" for family, if you have a dughter or whomever, do their cakes as your practice cakes! Beggers can't be chosers and they will be very appreciative of your beautiful "practice" castle cakes!

Your cakes are beautiful, you have talent and a whole year to plan this. Have the bride over to discuss details, then you can see exactly what you will need to plan.
Everyone has that OMG feeling when asked to do something a bit different, but just think how you'll feel next Dec when you have completed it and getting loads of compliments!
cheers

You can do florals, borders, icing appears smooth, and you seem to have some creativeity.... so why are you doubting yourself?
I just took a peek at your cakes and they are all beautiful and wonderfully executed! I think you will make a fabulous castle cake with no problem.
I will agree with everyone here, you have the skills. Maybe put a small version of one together to help you with the doubt and then go from there.
You can do it!
