Dummy Cake Not As Easy As I Thought!
Decorating By cocorum21 Updated 6 Jan 2007 , 1:51am by cocorum21
I thought this was going to be so easy! No baking, no clean up. I want to build a portfolio of cake designs I can do but I am tired of baking cakes just to have my DH tell me he is tired of cake. I can only give so many away because then people with start to expect them.
I am trying to work on a dummy cake with fondant. Of course I try the hardest shape first - square! The fondant kept ripping, I did a search and someone recommended using a nail file to round the corners just a bit. Worked great! Now, I can't keep the thing still! It's just too light. Does anyone have any advice on how to "hold it down"?
Hi, Well I'm not sure what you mean by holding it down, but I put some icing under it on a board then I can hang onto the board better than the iced dummy (cake that is) I hope this helps a little, I know when I did my first cake dummy, I covered it with saran wrap and then tried icing it,, it was a disaster. I have since learned some little tricks to it and it is better now, but still don't like doing it so much. Good luck.

I attach the dummy to the board with ring shank nails (little nails with ridges similar to a screw but less prnounced) then put the board on non skid mat on my turn table. I guess you could also tape the board to the turn table but I haven't tried that.
Hi friend! The nails work best! After you've decorated it you can also soak in the sink (with about 1t dawn) for a while and redecorate it!
How did it turn out with the building you found????
I use a hot glue gun to glue it directly onto my turn table (no mat), then to take it off, I just use an offset spatula CAREFULLY. Works like a charm. I did my grandmothers 12 tier wedding anniversary cake like this.

Hey! the building was bigger than I thought and would be more than I estimated.
But DH said to stop looking for space right now and just concentrate on purchasing the equipment I need and in 9 months look again. which I think was a great idea so I'm not stretching myself financially. I'll keep you posted.
Ok well I finished the dummy cake. I got finger prints in the fondant from trying to hold it still but it came out ok. Thanks for all the tips! Next time I'll try the tape I don't know why I couldn't have thought of that before
. the nail I'll have to ask DH to pick some up. God forbid I should step foot into Home Depot. I look like a man walking into Victoria's Secret ![]()
U don't go to Home Depot??
Girl, I would be lost with out it!! That's where I bought my table saw, jig saw, nail gun, cordless drill, spackling knife, and only gosh knows what else! I think I go there more than the cake decor store! ![]()
Sorry about the building! When you find the right one...you will know it! And it will be there at just the right time!! ![]()
I go to home depot for DH, he sends me for things that I have no clue what they are and I have to ask someone for the "thing that goes on the thing" I know my basic tools, and I did ask DH for a lesson using his tools but he says I'm too scatterbrain
lol
HD has a lot of DIY classes on the weekends. Here's a link, see what's near. They can also help you figure out tools, cut boards for you, they carry tiles and glass blocks for cake stands - you'll LOVE it once you get to know it better!
