Can You Preserve A Sugar Cookie?

My aunt asked if she could preserve one of the sugar cookies I made for my cousin's wedding shower. It's a sugar cookie with royal icing. Can that be preserved? She lost everything when hurricane Katrina hit, so I think she's trying to hold onto everything right now. The cookie itself was made this past October and is still in the favor bag. Should I tell her to do something else with it?
I would say yes she could. My reason for that is I made some for a demo several months ago and decorated them at Michaels. I came home and just put the tray of decorated cookies on top of my refrigerator - just covered with a sheet of wax paper - NOT sealed. I forgot all about the stupid things, and it was probably a month before I realized I had left them up there. They are STILL perfect! I just kept them to show some of the techniques I can do! They are rock hard and look just as pretty as the day I decorated them. They are the NFSC and royal icing - make sure she knows to keep them away from ANY humidity -that would be what would ruin them. Just keep them in the bag tied loosely, and put them somewhere dry!
I have the first 3D reindeer cookie I ever made from over a year ago. It's in a plastic favor bag. The buttercream (yuck!) accents have faded - in fact, now that I think about it, the sugar cookie has faded a bit too! Otherwise, it's in fine condition. I brought it to my cake club meeting without incident.
Seventeen years ago, I had a graduation cookie made for my daughter with her name on it. This was before I started doing cookies myself. The cookie is still wrapped and tied, it was never opened. It has faded a little, but other then that looks surpriseingly well. You might tell your Aunt that if she were to spray it with an acrylic spray or clear laquer it will keep the colors sealed, and should last a long time.
You can paint it with a mixture of (equal parts) of glue and water to preserve it. I have done this several times and it works great! (also keeps the 'critters' away
