I have shipped 200 across country. They were round no fail sugar cookie from CC with an edible image on each and piped shell trim around the image in royal icing. Each were bagged in a cello bag and tied with curling ribbon. I used 10 inch cake boxes and put bubble wrap between each layer. I had 4 boxes total and they were packed by my local UPS store in larger boxes and peanuts. It was quite expensive for my client and all of them got there except one.
It can be done. Wrap the cookies in bubble wrap and separate the layers with more bubble wrap.
The MOST IMPORTANT thing to do to prevent breakage is to pack the box of cookies INSIDE ANOTHER BOX, surrounded by styrofoam peanuts. The outer box will absorb any abuse or impact while the inner box is protected.
I ship cookies all the time and these are some important points:
The cookies MUST be wrapped to prevent bugs and humidity from getting to them. And individually is better if they are decorated so the vibrations do not destroy your designs.
So I wrap each one, get a basket or box the size I need. Rather than use bubble wrap (which can get quite expensive) I use paper shredd (nashvillewraps.com). So shred on the bottom to cushion a bit, One cookie in back, a bit of shred to protect from next cookie, then the next cookie. If you are using a box with lid, place shred on top of all the cookies and close the lid. If you are using a basket, place the whole thing in a shrink bag and shrink.
The thing that causes the damage is the cookies' ability to move or shake around. Gently shake the box to make sure they do not shift.
Then, shipping peanuts in bottom, you box or basket, and shippinh peanuts everywhere else. Fragile stickers on the outside. and also this side ups.
I ship cookies all the time too. I put each one in a cellophane bag, and add a little air to each bag to make it bubble, then tie with a ribbon. My boxes average around 7 inches around, so I put at least 4 side by side, first I lay down some big bubbled bubble wrap, then I lay down another layer, and so on and so on. I also make sure when I cut my layers of bubble wrap, that it is enough to cover the inside walls too. And thats usually it for me. I guess with the air in the individual bags, I have not had one break yet.
