When Covering A Cakeboard In Fondant......
Decorating By mjs4492 Updated 24 Jan 2007 , 8:36pm by mjs4492
... do you use the same color as the cake?
I have looked at the galleries pretty much all day and realize this is a personal preference but would like suggestions.
I've made ivory fondant rolled roses with very light/soft sage green leaves and thought about making the cake a shade or two darker than the roses. Then got to wondering about the color of the cake board? Was going to use bead piping the color of the roses around bottom edge of cake.
Just wanted some ideas, suggestions and opinions on the color of the cake board. Guess I could always cover it with the same old silver paper. Just wanted to try something different.
Thanks ![]()
Well mjs4492, green is my favorite color; especially that soft sage green.
I think you should do the board in the leaf color, the cake in 2 shades darker than the roses, do the bead border in the rose color and maybe adding some fondant accents on top of the board or cut out then replace with the color of the roses and or cake in whatever theme of the occasion.
I hope this helps. Please post pictures when you're done, I will be curious to see what your end result looks like.
Well, I know I'm not supposed to post like this, but here's the final cake. The ribbon around the cake board and cake was a first - used p. gel around cake board and icing around cake (to see the difference). Flowers on cake board cover the seam ![]()
Second attempt at SatinIce fondant.
Thanks for your help ![]()
What a gorgeous cake. It just says "Mother's Day" to me. You know I hear people complain when someone posts a photo in a thread, but for me it is wonderful because I can't possibly go back and see all of the cakes in the gallery that were posted before I became a member of CC. This way when I see one here I can click on that persons photos and see all of their work. And you do lovely work.
Whow, a beautiful cake the covered board just added so very much. Great job!
this is absolutely gorgeous! I was searching about covering cake boards
Yes.
This particular cake board is the half inch foam board. I spread a very thin layer of buttercream with a spatula over it. I didn't put any on the sides though. However, the fondant dried very well without it and I knew that I was putting the ribbon around it.
I put dots of icing with a tip 3 to secure the ribbon onto the fondant.

It took a couple of times for me to get the hang of SatinIce vs. Wilton's (only one that I'd used). I love the consistency, smell, appearance and taste of the SatinIce.
I've never used MMF. My next experience with fondant is the Pettinice. I also ordered the White Chocolate Fondant from Caljava. I think I need to get more experience with fondant before trying/making MMF.
Thanks for your compliment of my cake! For me, feedback is crucial and so important. Thanks for looking!
i just covered a board and I used some of my sugar glue that I use for modelling.. didn't see the corn syrup idea in this post and didnt have piping gel. it came out nice.. its BLACK

Thanks Mjs4492,
I´ve used MMF for everything but now would love to try something else, I was also curious about the caljava stuff, I read on the thread that the taste was amazing!!!! Let me know what you think... ![]()
Thanks again!
Hi,
I've been following your posts about covering boards with fondant and when you mentioned the foam board you really caught my attention. Is this something you cut to size, washable, reusable, strong, does it flex under much weight????? Too many questions, fill me in...please?

foamcore is like 2 pieces of posterboard with foam in the center. u cut it to size, I have never reused it.. it is stronger than regular cake boards, but u would prolly still need masonite for heavy cakes
Joanie:
Just like Lilthorner said, it's much stronger than the regular cardboard cake boards! It comes in 2 sizes - 1/2" and 1/4" and I usually find mine at either Michael's or Hobby Lobby. Prices vary but are between $1.00-$3.00 a sheet. Walmart carries the 1/4" for around $1.65.
I've never reused it either. I use it specifically when I'm going to cover it with fondant. The 1/2" is pretty thick but for a multi-tiered cake I think I would go to the masonite or something a bit stronger.
I had a bad experience with a sheet cake and the regular cardboard cake boards - the cake cracked right down the center when delivered. And this was even doubling the boards and running the corregations different ways. I've used the foamboard pretty much ever since. ![]()
Thanks for the info...how large is a sheet, and you usually use the 1/4 inch? and use a top cardboard cake board too? Yes, I too have had bad luck with cakeboards and especially sheet cakes. I bought some of the tuff boards from Sweet Sensations, but they still are not stable enough for a heavy large sheet cake to my satisfaction. My chocolate frosting sometimes will get a bit of a stress hairline crack...ugh! When I get it smooth I want it to stay smooth! Maybe I'm a bit too particular, but I like it that way! gggg I will check Michaels when I get there next. Thanks again!
Both sizes come 20" x 30" and lately I'm liking the look of the 1/2" boards. I don't use the regular cardboard cake boards with it at all.
You can cover it with the regular silver cake board paper or scrapbooking paper covered with contact paper. Too many choices for coverings but just like you would the regular boards.
I have all little sizes of "scraps" that I use for my 5" and 6" cakes. I've been pretty successful with it.
Thanks for the info, I'm going to Walmart later today and I will check it out! You guys are great!
