Now that the holidays are over I have time to play with my styrofoam cake dummies. I intend to try several wedding cake designs to build up my portfolio. I have a couple questions though:
1. Do I need to wrap the cake dummies in Saran Wrap first?
2. The styrofoam cake dummies are so light, how do I get them to stay on the cake board while working with them?
3. Do you have any other tips for practicing on cake dummies?
TIA
Also, does anyone have any suggestions for common designs that should go into my portfolio?
bump for ya..... i also am interested in cake dummy info. i have only worked on real cake however, i have an order for a wedding cake where the bottom tiers will be dummies sooooooo.... i'm interested in this feedback a well! specifically anchoring the tiers so the can be frosted....
Good questions! Cake dummies were on my Christmas list. I haven't had a chance to do anything with them yet. I am hoping to enter a cake in the Mid-Atlantic show in March an plan to use cake dummies for that. I have seen people on here say it's best to wrap the dummy in plastic wrap because it makes it easier to remove the icing if you want to reuse the dummy. I'm wondering how far ahead I can decorate the dummies. If I'm using decorator icing using Crisco, do I have to add anything to the icing to make it last and not turn moldy?
I searched this out yesterday on the forums to get ready for a bridal show this month. If you'll type in "dummies" in the forum search, it will bring up a TON of threads. Most of them should answer your questions and you'll get some GREAT ideas from them. HTH!! Good luck!
I don't wrap the dummies on plastic. Styro dummies are so cheap around here so I don't reuse them...also they're nice to keep for displays, etc.
To stick them to the cake board, I glue them down or use royal icing.
To stick fondant on, simply wet the styro with a little water or use piping gel.
I attach them to the cake board with small ring shank nails (nails with ridges simailar to a screw but less pronounced) then place the board on top of non skid mat on my turn table. I wrapped mine in saran wrap but have read that press n seal works better as the wrinkles in saran wrap are hard to cover with frosting. I'm not sure how long the icing will last but I have one that I did 3 months ago and it's fine. HTH
Thanks everyone. I plan on using the dummies to build my portfolio...i.e. do a cake, take a picture, scrape off the icing and do it all over again
You and I are in the same boat! My MIL is watching my munchin tomorrow while I go across town to buy my dummies. I am doing that for wedding cakes for a portfolio too! I've had long enough to thing about it being sick this past week, now Im ready to go at it!! I think I'll use the seal wrap on mine because i don't want to make a close to an hour trip every time i need one. Id rather buy all that i need then wrap them and then clean them! Im glad you asked about how to seal them on the boards. I didn't even think about how light they are. I guess i'll use the Royal icing.....that is, if I can get my Royal Icing Recipe to work dang it! I've got a wedding cake coming up and I certainly need the practice!
I can't wait to see you pics. I'll be putting mine on here too!
