I was just wondering what tools or tricks all you wonderful figure makers out there use? I have seen the works of Lorraine (aine2) and a couple other really great artists on here and was just wondering what you use to make the indents for the mouths & noses etc? Are they tools for polymer clay or something? And the shading of the cheeks & the painting of the eyes, what do you use for those? I really admire all the adorable figures and was hoping maybe you would be willing to share your craftiness ![]()
Any clay tool are great. For inspiration I use a clay book....
For eyes you can paint with watered down gel colors or use ediable markers. For cheeks I use petal dust that is used in making sugar flowers. I use use it dry and whip it on with a q-tip. Best of Luck....I know you can do it!
My favorite and most used tool is my stylus... it's great for faces and small details, I use it when piping to neaten and fix, when modeling, for tracing, to paint dots and dot flowers, to glue small details.....etc.etc.etc. I also use clay tools, kitchen gadgets, cake dec tools and any thing else I can get my hands on. If its not nailed down I can find a use for it!!!! lol
For eyes ad facial features I use chalk dust mixed with alcohol, this way you have really good control the constancy eg. for fine work and lines, through to textured work and shading. For cheeks and highlights I use chalk dust and gently dust on with a really soft brush.
you should try all different tools, gadgets and colour mediums (chalks, gels, liquids etc) .....not only will you find what's good for you you will have soooo much fun.... ![]()
A great book that helped me is called "Clay Characters for Kids" by Maureen Carlson. Things come out looking rather whimsical, but fun and great for kids cakes. ![]()
