This weekend is my son's party for his 3rd birthday. His "theme" is Disney's Cars. I had an idea in my head for what I thought was going to be a really great cake icon_biggrin.gif , original, my own design, pretty simple to execute, etc. Well, I run the idea by DH, and he says "that's cute, but what about a racetrack"...and proceeds to give me ideas in that direction. icon_confused.gif Well, I couldn't really visualize it in my head, so of course, I came here to faithful CC for inspriration. I got a couple of good ideas from looking at everyone's cake, but those aren't MY ideas. Know what I mean? Anway, my question is, do I go with my idea that I was pretty excited simply for the fact that it was original and thought up by me alone, or go with my hubby's idea that HE seems really excited about and use the help of my friends' ideas here on CC? I know it's not a big deal, just wondering what some of you might do...

Well if it were me to cancel out future arguements or hurt feelings I would make BOTH! icon_biggrin.gif Make a small smash cake with the race track on it and make yours as the main cake that will be fed to the party attendants icon_smile.gif That way you are using both your original idea as well as your husbands idea and no one has hurt feelings and there is no room for arguements about "Why didn't you like my idea?!?! it was just as good as yours!?!" lol sometimes our loving husbands can be just as bad as our children icon_wink.gif

Also it would be ten times better if the race track smash cake would tie into your design as well icon_wink.gif

Is there any way to blend the two ideas together? If not I'd be gracious and go with DH. It is a sure fire way to get a DH enthusiastic about your passion. And that goes for other family members also. They love to see their ideas come to life. At least in my family that happens. Not all the ideas and designs are good mind you, but it is a great way to share close times with family members and get them to appreciate all that goes into what you do.

I think you should go with the idea that your son would like the most.

My boys seemed to like the race track better than anything in the movie.

Good Luck!

I would probably do both because I know how it feels to have the idea in your head and ready to do it. icon_smile.gif

I don't know if any of you have seen the movie, but my idea was to make Flo's Diner, or cafe I forget which. I would just make a round cake, since that is the shape and decorate it like her diner. It's fairly simple, actually, then I was going to put all of the cars on it or around it, I was still figuring that part out. So Flo's Diner is in Radiatior Springs, and the race track isn't. I don't know. Usually I can't come up w/ any ideas on my own, I think that is why I was so gung-ho with this one.

Anyone have any ideas to combine the 2 together? If not, I think mmdd is right. My son might not know what the diner is, but he'll get the idea of the race track.

Well you could make the race track as the outside border on the top of the cake.... if that would work... or maybe the race track could run around the cake ontop of cupcakes icon_wink.gif like decorate the center piece as the Diner and then place cupcakes around it and ice them to look like a race track... that way it incorporates both ideas and everyone is pleased. Even if he doesn't understand the diner he is only 3 right? My 4 yr old nephew knows ALOT more then I think he would lol he may remember seeing the diner in the movie and relate back to it icon_wink.gif As for the race track part.... it's very hard to get black with buttercream.... so I wish you luck icon_wink.gif

Edited to add: as you might have guessed I haven't seen the movie yet lol BUT I was thinking if the race track is say down the street so to speak from the Diner maybe the idea of the smash cake would work afterall... have two cakes maybe not a small smash cake but the same size as the Diner cake and make it the race track.... having both parts of the movie shown and having cars racing as well as cars dining icon_smile.gif

How about 2 tiered cake. diner on top and race track with cars around the ledge on bottom layer?

I think this is a really cute idea, and you could buy the cars at Walmart. My walmart has had the collection of cars for around 3.25 a piece

There is a dirt track just outside of Radiator Springs, you could put Flo's on an oval cake or something. Use graham crackers for the dirt.

I don't know if you can find one but I know that they make Dirt Track McQueen in the small diecast size and he would be perfect on the track.

I'd make your idea first, it's way cooler.

I thought Flo's was a gas station, not a diner....I guess it would be a diner for cars though - it's where they fill up.

I made a 3D Lightning McQueen cake and my son LOVED it. That's an idea too. But if you don't happen to have that pan, I would go with what everyone else said and try to incooperate both ideas. That would be special for your son to look back at pictures and know that his cake was an original creation and collaborative work of his parents.

Good luck with the cakes though...I love that movie.

Luv2cake, on her sign, it says cafe. I guess it is a place for the cars to "fill up." Maybe it's kind of a truck stop so to speek w/ a gasoline station and cafe. Here is a picture in case anyone can come up w/ anymore ideas.

Oh you are so right. It's a cafe (diner) for cars. Clever, clever.

Anyone have any clever ideas on how to create the awnings, or whatever you call them. where the cars are parked under. It'd be cool if I could do those, w/ the cafe as the cake and just use the actual toy cars for the cars. Any ideas out there?

Mater IS great on that one. I don't think I have the time for that, though. Didn't plan well enough for somethig like that. Now I'm thinking maybe I can do 2 cakes, one race track and one Flo's Cafe, just make them smaller, that way it'll be a scene type cake. What do you all think?

An update to my cake saga...we went a totally different route! I know, I know, all the advice you all gave me icon_redface.gif But thank you soooo much for all of your input. I appreciate it so very much. We decided THE NIGHT BEFORE to do a cake to look like the character Mack from the movie. It turned out pretty good, I think. And, a plus, I think it was easier than the other ideas we had! Also, I still got to be creative and original, which I am very proud of icon_biggrin.gif Thanks again to all of you for your help and advice, you are WONDERFUL! thumbs_up.gif
