Ok I had a very last minute order for a cake, mom called last night at 445 to tell me she needs a sheet cake for today by 530 when she gets off work. So I show her the sheet cake pans and ask which she'd like to have and she picks the biggest of course so I go out and get the stuff to bake the cake, hubby stays up until 4 am making icing and I wake up this morning not having a clue! what to do with it lol....

She wants it plain white so I was just going to do a nice border on top and bottom and leave it be. But now my problem... what border should I use??? Ok I guess I should explain the function... her best friend's father passed away on New Year's Eve and tonight is the viewing and she wants the cake to take with her tonight, I'm guessing for the gathering after the funeral tomorrow I dunno... But I don't know how to do very many borders so if yall could help with ideas and maybe pictures of said borders so I can see which ones I think I can pull off I'd really REALLY REALLY!!!!!!!!! appreciate it! icon_smile.gif

Thanks in advance guys!
Becky

I think just a shell border would be fine and simple.

If you want to do something a little different I love the reverse shell border. I have done it on several of my cakes and it is very easy. You just alternate which way the shell points, either right or left. If you look in my photos you can see on the second page, the Cub Scout Raingutter Regatta cake has this border. Then I usually just use a regular shell on the bottom.

I don't know how to do the shell border yet icon_cry.gif I don't know what to call the ones I know how to do but I do a swirly one where I just make a bunch of I guess lower case E's that all connect to each other.... and I attempted the reverse shell I guess it is... the one that is similar to half a heart going one way and then the other half below it.... or maybe like a question mark and then a reverse question mark would better explain it... but I don't think that turned out well enough for this..... This woman has been in our life for a very long time mom went to school with her so I know I'll get orders from this but I don't really want to benifit from such a function as a funeral but I do want this to be perfect for her....

Lejla - that is an impressive page, thank you! The pricing (adding a % for detail work) is a good idea as well.

OhMyGoodies - if you don't know how to do the shell border, just do some larger stars next to each other as the border. Or take a round tip (maybe 4 or 5) and make large dots next to each other as the border. I would do what you are most comfortable with. If you are wanting any type of a simple design on the cake (white on white), you could do some sotas or cornelli lace, that would be simple and tasteful.

Good luck....it is nice that you are doing this for the family.

Thanks for the input and ideas gang. I checked out everyone's photos to see examples and I'm not confident that I can make the shell border look good enough for this so I think I'll stick with what I know and be done with it. I want it to be perfect and steping into unknown waters isn't good for this project icon_smile.gif

Thanks again everyone!

Becky,
I looked at your pictures and the border on the pink cake or the yellow one would be good ones to use. Go with what you know and then when you get a chance practice the other ones.
Sorry for the loss.

Hi Becky: I know you have received many suggestions but here's one more. Use tip #12 and pipe balls next to each other for a border. It's fast and will look very professional.

Try inverting your cake pan and practice making your borders around it as though it was a cake...wipe off with your rubber spatula and restart till you find a comfortable border that works for you...if the shell borders don't work out, then try using a star boarder with your tip #32...make sure you stay consistent, its all in your pressure and release, do this till you master it and then apply it to your cake.

I think the border you did on the "Funeral reception" cake in your gallery is very nice & would be appropriate. The "rope" border is also a nice one to use if you need something plain.

Thanks Lejla for the website, it is very nice.
OhMyGoodies, If this border is for the bottom of the cake try doing a double row of balls or stars, placing the 2nd. row in the slight spaces of the 1st. row.

Thank you all for your suggestions and help with this. My hands were hurting so bad today I just did my normal one icon_cry.gif I wish I was feeling better I would've tried something new. The picture is in my photo section if you'd like to take a look at it. It's all white as my mother requested and was way too plain for me so I did my take on sotas but I don't think it was very good lol. Mom really liked it said it was a very nice and good way to add decoration to the top of it without really adding decoration considering the "event" type it was....

Anyway thank you all so very very much!!! I will be using your ideas and trying new things over the next few weeks and will probably have to PM some of you for some more help lol. Thanks bunches!

Becky
