You can do a doctored mix - DH Classic yellow is very good. Do the cake mix extender from this site. I've made scratch - but nothing beats this!
It has a. . .yellowy flavor. . . 
It's good, don't worry. Can't really explain the taste, but I like it, so that means it must be pretty good!

Yellow cake IS hard to describe...but it's one of my favs! I've added butter extract to it. I'm not really sure what else would be good in it...maybe some of the coffee creamers? HTH
