So I decided to call my local Michaels to ask when they are starting a new round of classes for Wilton I. But the class started yesterday. I was told that Wilton II starts tonight and I can join now if I have a little experience. What will I be missing? Is it too much to jump into now, should I just wait until next month and take Wilton I. I've been decorating a little on my own and I have a few pans and tips and I've even used some store bought fondant. I can pipe lines, dots, and leaves and even make buttercream from memory now.. Should I wait to take Wilton I or should I go ahead and start Wilton II?

You could take course 2 and then go back and take course 1, but it might just be easier to wait one month. You could always try it and see it your skill level is up to it.

I would just wait and take class 1 there are a lot of different decorating borders that they teach in Wilton I.

I've taken all three courses and taught them as well. I recommend taking Wilton 1 first -- it gives you the very basics of how to use a pastry bag while course 2 elaborates on that. It's best not to put the cart before the horse.

If you start with Course II, you will still need the tips that came in the Course I box...

I took Course III after Course I, at the WMI's urging and she couldn't figure out why I didn't have any of the required equipment icon_sad.gif

If you only have missed the first day of class, call and ask if you can start with course one lesson two. The first lesson, is really just a demo, showing you what you learn and what you need to buy to get through class. If your instructor is okay with it, and there is room then you shouldn't have a problem with starting with the 2nd lesson.

The biggest problem i can see with starting with course 2 instead of course one is course2 is mainly flowers, and if you don't know how to make roses, you will have a harder time with the 2 course cause the first night is mums and they build off of what you have learned in course 1, and the borders build off of the shells you learn how to do in the first classes.

Thanks everyone. I think I will call and see if I can start Course I on the second night. I dont know why they wouldnt let me. I think that would be best too. I certainly need to learn the roses, I cant seem to figure them out on my own and the books and pictures arent helping me any.
