I am thinking about signing up for the Wilton Course I starting next week, but I am leary about signing up bc I am NOT sure if I can do it! I haven't really done anything but star tips & smooth buttercream. I know the only way to learn is to give it a shot but I am so leary that I won't be able to do what is rquired. I have looked at the cakes that people have done for their courses and sit here saying "WOW!" I am a person that needs the hands on but not sure if I can cut the mustard! Does anyone have any words of widsom for before I sign up for the class?? Thanks!
You will totally be fine. I peeked at your gallery and you already do great work. Course I is designed for people who have had no experience at all. The thing is that they teach you the secrets of how to get some great looking techniques that look difficult but really are not when they are taught to you. There is good and bad about Wilton courses - you can find plenty discussions in the forums. But if you are thinking of signing up, don't hesitate to do it based on wondering if you will be able to do the techniques. You'll be totally fine. ![]()
Oh you definately need to take the classes!! Even if you don't do as well as some of the class memebers, it is so much fun to be around people talking nothing but cake!!
I really don't think you have to worry about measuring up or cutting the mustard. Your cakes are great in your photos and you do have the ability to do it!! It's so much fun!
I felt the same way when I first signed up to take the course and now I'm an instructor! You'll be amazed how easy some things are once someone explains it to you. I learn better hands on rather than having to read directions. Plus you'll learn some great secrets and tips that just make things a bit easier. Definitely sign up - you'll love it.
I am going to be taking the Wilton Course 1 this month. I'm a total newbie. I seriously dont think that my cakes will look anything like the ones posted on here. I have the first cake I made in my photos, and it looks like poop compared to pics I've seen that other people posted here on CC. But, my goal is to learn, and I'm sure I will! ![]()
I say if its something you WANT to do, then go for it. I'm sure youll learn, and have fun doing it. Good Luck.

For all you newbies with concerns, don't sweat it. Take your time, practice what you have learned and if you have questions, call your teacher or ask us on CC. I know it's easy to compare your work to others, but remember, Wilton is a METHOD. It is designed to teach you how to have uniformity in your flowers, borders, etc. each time you pipe them. You will get better with time. It may seem overwhelming at first but if you break it down into baby steps and just focus on one thing at a time, you will be amazed at how quickly you progress! Relax -- it's sugar, it's fun!!! ![]()
I have taken course one. I found it very helpful. It is very basic. Stars are one of the items covered. Sometimes the usefulness of the course depends on the teacher. I had a good teacher and learned quite a bit. My sister took it in another state and her teacher had kind of a didn't want to be there attitude and didn't get the same level of instruction. There were even kids in my class. Go for it! You are probably more advanced than some that are there.

Okay, I went and signed up for it! I am really excited to do this and learn how to do other things. But than I get thinking in my head that I won't be able to cut the mustard! I am going to do it atleast have some me time away from my children!
Looking forward to that
I thought the same thing once. I had creative ideas, but wanted to learn all the "tricks", like how to make different borders and flowers. Not only did it turn out to be not as hard as it looks, I started being asked "how much for a cake?" just after I started course 2! The class itself was so much fun. We weren't there comparing skill, as we all made our own funny mistakes and such. But it was a blast. I think you should take the course. I know you'll love it.
