Just have a question to all and to the teachers of Wilton 3.
This class is offered at only one store right now and I want to take it so in February I can take that gumpaste class. I know I don't have to take one to take the other. BUT......I'm the only one signed up!! Michael's said the class will still go on even if I'm the only student, but I don't want to make the teacher do this. Michaels said it's better to have a one-on-one with the teacher (I'm taking it at a different Michaels so I don't know the teacher).
Should I cancel MY class? I enjoyed working when there were others in the class. I know a Huge class is rough, but 5-6 people is fun.
What should I do???????? I have today to decide. Please inform!!!!!

I will agree with you that the more students the more fun a class can be. I have taught some 1 student classes and found that I can include a little extra stuff, thats my just be me.
As a teacher please do not cancle the class. If I have no class scheduled I have no pay cheque coming in.
Just my thoughts

The Wilton instructor will get paid the same whether it's one student or ten. I would personally take advantage of it & get as much one-on-one attention as you can! If she doesn't teach at all, I don't think she'll get paid so she'll probably be happy if there's at least one student.

I agree with chloesmom! I would still take the class. And I wouldn't cancel because there might still be some last minute people who register the day of the class.

i did my course 3 as a one-on-one with my teacher, as i was the only one signed up. it was actually kind of fun. i had a lot more time to experiment and try things that i needed individual help with. it wouldn't have been possible with a larger class. my instructor also accelerated the class so that i did 2 classes a week and finished after 2 weeks... there's a lot more flexibility when it's a one-on-one.
just my $0.02... hth icon_biggrin.gif

Thank you so much for your input! I was afraid the teacher might not want to teach only one. But I really want to take this class but not have her 'take it out on me', not that she would. Okay, I'll go with it. And you're right, someone may sign up last minute.
Thanks everyone.

I would have to agree and go ahead with the course. You never know when another will be offered! I teach at Hobby Lobby and must have 4 students signed up in order to have the class. That is a bummer! I never know until the last minute if I will have a class or not! Hard to prepare!

P.S. I've heard that the Gumpaste class will not be offered until May? At least that is what it is for me. Might be different for Michaels?

Regarding the gumpaste class, Michaels told me February. I went into the store today and they already have the student kits out for it.
We'll see.
Checked in with the class schedule and I'm still the only one signed up for Wilton 3 but they assured me the class will still go on.

Forgot to ask all of you.....
Michaels said I bring NOTHING to the first class. This seems very unusual. Any thoughts on this? I used to get a paper that told me what to bring, but there was none. Don't know if I should bring my student kit or not, or do nothing. Don't want to waste time either with no supplies.

I am starting Wilton 3 on Thursday and I already have the course guide (my instructor handed them out as we finished Course 2.) There's no list of things to bring for Lesson 1 in the guide, but we were told to bring our practice buttercream and a small box of the Wilton Fondant along with all the usual stuff. Lesson 1 uses both of those things. (so why you're not instructed to bring them is beyond me, but...)

So if you can get in touch with the instructor, do, but if not, you might want to bring that stuff. Especially if you're the only student--you can get started right away! thumbs_up.gif

Bring some toothpics too, you will be making the centers for the fondant roses you will finish later. A piece of styrofoam is nice too - gives you something to "stick" them in to dry!

I teach at Micahels. I am actually teaching my first course 3 this month with only 1 person signed up. I taught course 1 last month with one person and she loved it. I was able to spend more time with her needs as well as other things that are not in the course 1 book. I liked it and i know she did. as far as supplies you should call the store and ask for the sheet that tells you what to bring. If they don't have it ask for the events cordinator she will have it.
The gumpaste and fondant is going to be great!! The kit is a great deal. Use your coupon and its even better. Just like the cupcake release, Gumpaste and Fondant are exclusive to Michaels for febuary and i think march.
good luck

It is actually through April, no one else can teach it till May!

What you need to ask for is the class syllabus ~ there should be one for each of the courses up front in the book when they sign up for the class.

I asked for the sheet for Wilton 3 and there was none! The class is this Thursday night. I have the student kit and I have a box of the fondant. I think I will call the store today before work and see if they can call the instructor. I'd feel really stupid not bringing anything. The store said the first class she will take me up and down the Wilton isle and show me stuff. Duh! Like I haven't been up and down that isle a million times already, so I'm not sure how this will work. I don't have the instruction book as this is a different Michaels and different instructor since this was the only Michaels offering 3 now. I didn't sign up after 2 since 3 was offered during Thanksgiving and it was too busy of a time for me. I really feel like I'm in unfamiliar territory like the first day of Kindergarten. Ugh! Will let you know unless someone else knows what I should do! Thanks so much.

You are not required to have course 3 before taking the fondant and gumpaste course. The only prerequisite is course one. So you could take course three after the fondant course if you felt more comfortable.

Barbend,
I know I don't have to take it, but I thought having a little experience with fondant would help me with the gumpaste class. I really want to take 3 so I think I may just go with it. If I'm unhappy with the class, I can always cancel myself if necessary. I just don't like the idea of taking nothing to the first class knowing others are saying you need stuff.

According to the class syllabus for Michael's course three, you have to bring
Receipt for class, pen, scissors, toothpicks, wax paper, pink or rose icing colors, small spatula, 4 airtight containers holding 1 recipe of class buttercream( 1/2 cup thin, 1 1/2 cup med,1/2 cup med with 1/4 tsp piping gel added and 1/2 cup stiff)

Hope this helps

Sorry i left out a few things. The syllabus also says you will need:
24oz pkg of rolled fondant, 2TBsp veg shortnening, course 3 kit, tape, 2decorating bags, measuring spoons, tips 3, 16, 104, 1, 2, 5, and three small storage bags.. You may not need to bring all items to your first class. I reccommend you call the instructor

hi vicky,

you should go ahead and take the class even though you will be the only one there....i was in a gumpaste class with just two people in it (i was one of them) and i couldn't go to my last two classes (long story) but i would have been the only one in my last class as the other lady was out of town.

as far as not bringing anything, just carry some stuff just in case...i was told not to bring anything for my first wilton class (when i signed up) and when i got there, everyone had everything and lucky for me, i was in a class full of nice ladies who let me mooch off of them for the night icon_smile.gif

As an instructor, I say take the class. We get paid the same for 1 person or 4 so don't worry about it. You'll get more one on one attention which if you were paying for private lessons would cost you a LOT more. The instructor should call you a few days before class to confirm everything, at least I do, and make sure you have what is needed for the class. But if I were you, I'd call them and find out - sometimes things happen. Good luck and enjoy those "private lessons."
