Making A Good Impression/hostess Gifts

Little off topic (mods delete if necessary) but I am meeting my BFs family for the first time in a few weeks. I am a little nervous as I want to make a good impression with his sisters and Dad. I would like to bring cookies or a cake. I will have access to the kitchen in his apartment but want to limit the number of supplies that I transport because I'll be flying. (I have visions of paste colors coming open in my luggage
) I can mail supplies in advance of my arrival, if need be.
What sort of cookies or cake would you bring? Specifically what design, flavor, etc. I am leaning toward cookies as the 'hostess gifts' will need to be taken to three different households and there is less room for error when making cookies. Oh, and if it is helpful...they live in NC.
All suggestions/replies are appreciated.
What about making some special Biscottis drizzled with chocolate (dark or white)? They aren't so fragile, easy to make, nice looking, can be packaged in cute packages with bows and are a nice gift for someone to have later with thier coffee? AND it wouldn't take so many tools, or so much icing etc....

That is a good idea. If you want to go fancy, you can bake and decorate some cookies with rolled buttercream in advance and package them and bring them already decorated with you and save yourself the trouble of doing that there. And/or, you could go simple and avoid decorating (or transporting) goods there. I often just bake brownies, or an apple cake, or a simple cobbler - you can pick up the fresh fruit at a grocery store there, and all you need to do is buy flour, sugar and eggs there. You could also buy one of those disposable metal pans (for cooking a lasagna), and then you don't have to worry about needing to get a dish back. Or you could bake in advance, cut them up and put them in pretty tins and take them with you - just some simple cookies - an assortment of oatmeal raisin, peanut butter, chocolate chip. Or a mix of brownies and blonde brownies and oatmeal raisin chocolate chip bars. I find that simple is always a big hit when it is baked from scratch. You could whip up a batch of each in one night, divide them up evenly in pretty decorative containers, and hand them out. It shows off baking skills, but not your decorative talents . . . depends on what you want to emphasize.
When I met my husband's family for the first time, I just brought a bunch of homemade stuff, and they loved it all . . . I didn't think I had done anything special because I used really basic boring recipes, but they thought it was so nice and thoughtful, and were impressed because it was baked from scratch. So, I guess I'm saying a little will go a long way!
