I am new to this forum and I'm thinking of starting to get into the cake decorating business but I have no money right now, but I want to do this on the side at first, then see how it works out! Does anyone have any advice about this cake decorating business? I have no experience in this business does anyone have the same testimony?

hi trista,
first of all welcome to CC ![]()
as far as starting a cake decorating business, i wasn't too sure where you are located so here are two links to give you some idea what you are looking at....you might want to check with your state health inspector as well (if you are in the states)

alot of the people on this site have home / store front businesses who have more of an idea how to run something like this.
i don't have the client based built up just yet as i am fairly new to this as well but i plan on taking as many classes as i can to perfect my techniques...
you can try doing cakes for your friends, neighbours, church functions etc...if you read through the postings on this site, they will give you alot of ideas as well...as far as not having alot of money, you can try a small business loan when you feel comfortable enough to open your business...

Well right now i'm in beaufort SC and I'm a mililtary spouce in the marine Corp. I'm just looking for a hobby to do and I'm willing to try new things and cake baking seem to present itself. So i'm starting to take the wilton cake decorating classes and I'm looking to do cake decorating on the side. Any advice?
Hello there!
I was pretty much in your same shoes about one year ago. I am a Military spouse in the Army and was looking for a hobby and boy did I finid it in cake decorating, much more than I thought I would. I took course 1 about a year ago and really enjoyed it and continued on and took both course 2 and 3. My advice to you and to take the course 1 and see how you like it and go from there! Do not invest too much into it until you have taken the class and figured out if it is something you want to do.
you are starting on the on right path....if you are living on base then you can build your client base from there....even if you are not living on base you still make your contacts from there....make sure you bake and sell from your home legally first but you can always make your initial contacts through "donations"...
My Oven is really bad and I was thinking of using my friends oven or my churches oven for a while until something changes. Right now I just need to keep myself motivated b/c I am sooooo new at this and I really don't want to start something and then get in the middle of it and change my mind. I really don't have any money and right now I'm just going by faith, hoping I won't mess up or do anything bad...I talk to my husband and he said he would support me, So I really don't want to dissapoint him. Taking that one class I just want to see then go and decide, if I want to do this or not!
Thank You for all the advice!!
