If a pan holds 12 cups of water to be filled to the brim, how many cups of batter would I use in the pan?

Do I use half or two-thirds or how much?

What if it is a shaped pan instead of a regular layer cake?

I use for my cakes two cake mixes and fill the pan 2/3 of the way! With the left over mix I make cup cakes or small little cakes for my family! HTH
