to make cakes constantly?! I think about it all the time, but I don't have the opportunity-icon_sad.gif-... no birthdays, no anniversaries, no showers... we live in SC and everyone we know lives in MO (DH is in the USN)... I know I would have opportunities if we lived near home, but I don't know enough people here to get it out of my system... and I don't have the confidence/experience to advertise/sell, I don't think... I just find myself constantly thinking about it (and looking at this site 800 times a day doesn't help any! icon_smile.gif )... but if I made a cake everytime I wanted to I would weigh 1,000 lbs! And so would the people we know!!
Just wondering if I was the only one...

The obsession does temper itself--a bit--after some time.

I no longer dream about cakes, which I consider a step through therapy. This is still the first site I look at when I log on--who cares what is on the news anyway icon_smile.gif

One thing that might satisfy it is to make small cakes--6 inch or cupcakes--just big enough to practice your skills...JAT

I can relate....I remember when I was just like you. I make cakes for my neighbors. A good way to get to know them better. Confess! Tell them of your addiction and need to practice. They'll love you for it. Also, when there's an occasion at work/church/community~~~ volunteer to bring a cake. It's great advertising and practice. This is how I built my home-based business (which is legal where I live.....). If you have kids~ school parties open a door too. I've dropped cakes off at places where we do business, like the mechanic who works on our vehicles. THEY LOVE ME!!!! Also....at the bank drive thru.....THEY LOVE ME TOO!!!! lol! Just think outside the box and you'll come up with creative outlets for your "habit".

I'm always looking for a reason to make a cake. I send them to work with DH and take them to the Nursing Home where my dad is. You can always doante them to local hospitals or nurisng homes. You can also practice decorating on cake pans without actually baking a cake or invest in styrofoam cake dummies that you can use over and over again. Happy Decorating!

I totally understand your situation. I am an Army wife (my dad was in the USN), currently stationed in North Pole, Alaska. On top of the -50 and darkness, cake eating is not condusive to a nice waistline. There are NO cake stores, classes, anything like that....(other than the basic wilton courses)so I have learned alot with trial and error. I have made MANY cakes for different units here on the base, offering to do stuff for the Officers and Enlisted Spouses clubs, changes of command, and different ceremonies and such. I started by making cakes for my hubby to take to work, once it caught on, I was getting calls from different units all over the base. I started doing them at cost, once I got a little better I started charging more, but still usually give them a deal since most of them have to do some tyoe of fundraising to pay for the cakes, besides, we are all in this together! I hope this helps, our situation is unique. I hope to open a shop one day, but will have to wait until my hubby gets out, I can't move it every 3 years! So for now, it's a hobby and a way to help out some of the units.

(raises hand)

I love to bake, period...but I live alone, and can't count on my friends to do more than pick at anything. I refuse to bring dessert items to potlucks anymore because there are always 234 pans of brownies-from-a-box and 4354 trays of grocery store cookies--so homemade cake is lost in the shuffle and uneaten, or--this really drives me nuts--people will take two or three small pieces and the rest will be untouched. I sometimes will cut a recipe in half and make myself one 8 or 9 inch layer, but that's still too much cake for me.

Sometimes, if the urge is just too much, and they've been good, I bring cupcakes or cookies to my students. They're thrilled to get something that didn't come from the cafeteria.

I know I am! I had a busy spell lately with my husband's birthday, Christmas, work potlucks, etc. Now, I'm sitting here thinking about *when* I'm going to make my next cake. I already told the police officers I work with (I'm in the Detective Bureau) and at the Police Academy where my husband is a deputy that they are going to be my test subjects for awhile. I'll probably take in cakes on a regular basis to them. All of my family live in Kentucky, where I'm from, so I have to rely on making cakes for my husband's family here in Iowa. They don't have a family birthday until April. One good thing though, my husband just became a Shrine Clown so I'll be making a lot of cakes for them also. Plus, my son is just 3 so I'll be making goodies for his daycare too.

I have the same problem. I started taking them to our neighborhood fire stations, hair dresser, friends workplaces and so on. I have actually gotten several jobs off of it! I just take a day and bake several small 6" cakes and then figure out what I want to do on each one and then spend a glorious day, as my husband says, "Lost in cake land!". I thought the feeling would go away after a few months, but no, it hasn't! Oh well, I guess if my house ever catches fire I will get top priority! ha ha!

I started making cakes to take to work and if by chance I don't bring one in, there are many disappointed people..they love the cakes...now my DH wants them for his work!! icon_lol.gif

I think taking them to people you do business with on a regular basis is great too!! You can get business this way, even if you aren't looking for any!!

I think there are a lot of us who dream in terms of cakes and more cakes!!

I understand completely. My husband is in USAF and we live in SC too. All my family lives in IN, but I have my daughters first birthday in a week though, so at least I get to make a cake for that. Then there is Valentines Day, my dh's birthday (he hates cake though.....hmmmm), Then my son's birthday. So I guess I am good until March. Wonder what I'll do then???

I am in the same boat right now. Im just learning so I think about it all of the time and dream about it....and Im constantly on here and/or sketching cakes. Luckily I have a lot of cake lined up from now to June but what i am going to do is buy the dummy cakes and practice that way. I am also going to use the dummies to decorate and build my portfolio! You could do that in your spare time. You can decorate dummy cakes to practice new things.

I was like that in the beginning, but then the orders started rushing in and I couldn't keep up. Now I'm still excited when an order comes in, but I also realize how much time and work it is.
