I need a Dallas Cowboy helmet for Monday.

I think I have the baking and carving part figured out, but I need help with the color.

Cowboys have gray and blue colors. So can someone tell me how to get the gray color? Or should it be silver ? If silver how much luster dust might it take ? I don't have a whole lot, and there is no where around here to get it.

Anyone have any tips, I would really appreciate it.

Oh, the helmet is going to be maybe 2 8 or 9 inch round, plus I have the Betty crocker back and fill, so I will be using the large ball shaped pan from that. Just a idea on the size for the luster dust question.

Thanks, Lisa

I just use a tiny bit of black coloring in a fair amount of frosting to get a gray color. Make sure that your gray is just a touch lighter that what you are after as it will darken as it dries. this should apply to buttercream as well as fondant.

Maybe if you color your icing gray and then put your luster dust on top of the color. Don't wet it down, just blow it on buttercream or dust it on fondant.
I hope this helps!
Good luck!

in the newest issue of American Cake Decorating they showed you how they did a helmet. I have a picture of a Raider's helmet cake in my photos and I used a little (very little black) until I reached the desired color. Make the face mask as soon as possible and elt it dry. I had such a hard time because I kept putting it off.

I have the magazine article I can scan and send to you if you don't have it. But you have to wait til I get off work at 4:30 today. Send me a message if you want it.

I would suggest that you cover it with light grey fondant, then lightly DRY dust with super pearl dust or silver dust. this will give you a metalic or chrome like surface. it should take very little of the dust that way. If you are doing buttercream, i wouldnt recommend blowing the dust on, because that way , it would seem that you'd be spreading un-necessary germs...just my opinion. so with buttercream i think it would be sufficient to just color it grey. i did read one time that you could dry dust on bc...but i wouldnt risk smudging up your surface.
