Hello all,

I want to create a frozen transfer using tinted piping gel for a stained glass effect. Is this possible? Will the gel harden? I am planning on using Wilton's black piping gel for the outline, and will fill in using a tinted gel.

Any tips?

Why yes it is possible, and there's even an article on how to do it:

If I understand correctly, you are asking if you can fill in an entire design with piping gel, then transfer the whole thing onto the cake? I don't think you can do it. I don't think the gel would come off the paper cleanly. I think the tutorial posted for transferring just the outline of the design would be your best bet. Then, you can fill in with piping gel directly on the cake.

As a side note, I'd recommend making your black outline with buttercream rather than piping gel. (after the pattern has been transferred to the cake) It will look much cleaner.

Piping gel can freeze ...on your cake...but I do not think it's a good Frozen transfer medium , but the only way to make sure is to do a practice run.

Thanks for all the advice. I will use buttercream for the outline and just fill in directly on the cake. The design is simple so I shouldn't have a problem.

Thanks again. icon_biggrin.gif

after thinking on this a little bit..I think that after you do your frozen bct..and you placeit on your cake..youcan fill in the areas that you want to make to look like stain glass windows with the gel...but it wont freeze..sorry..well..it will melt and make a mess..

Or I could be wrong...you can always do a test run.

The stained glass design is just going to be a simple cross, so I might just do a BCT for the outline, or even a gel transer and then trace with BC overtop. Because the client wants simplicity I'll use a pearly gel filler for the cross, with a white BC outline.

If I had more time, I would have done a trial run. Oh well.

Thanks again, everyone has been very helpful.
