I want to make fondant fans for a cake. I was thinking of taking card stock paper and make the fan shape and then drape the thinly rolled fondant or gumpaste on it then leave to dry. Will that work or no? If I want to embellish or paint it I need to do that before I drape it right? I want it to have defined folds like a fan. If this won't work are there any other suggestions? TIA!

Is this going to be standing upright on a cake or laying down? That might affect how you make it.

If you are wanting a look of a fan I would decorate after I placed the piece on the cake. But if you are wanting it to look like folds then before I placed it on the cake. There are Fan cutters made out in ciber land.

Is it something like this ? I also bought the fan cutter from Creative Cutters.. The finish product look like the real fan that Spanish Senoritas use. The one that folds and opens....

I want one large one to go on top of the cake, upright. I may need some support for that one. The others will go on the sides. Sitting on one tier and leaning against the other. Does that make any sense? I hope so...

Will it work? Do I need some kind of support so it goes into the cake some how? Like a popsicle stick or something?

They have my alot of my pay checks there.... icon_lol.gificon_lol.gificon_lol.gif I love them and yes I have the same cutters. Love them. Have fun. But if you don't want to spend the $$$ find a pattern and use put it on a thicker paper and cut it out and use it that way. Like the babie booties here on CC photo site.

I have been wanting to do that too! I was just going to wing it but the paper method sounds like it should work. I'll practice and we'll see!

Do you have Scott Clark Woolley's book "Cakes by Design"? In it he has two versions of fans which can be done from gumpaste. I did the solid version on a cake last summer and it worked well. The other version involves cutting each piece of the fan and stringing them together (not interested!) I did, however, end up buying the cutter though... icon_smile.gif

Ooooh, I do have that book. I'll check it out. I have seen the cutters on his site but again, trying not to spend but if I gotta, I gotta. Thanks! icon_smile.gif

Mich Turner also has chocolate fans in her book, but they're more whimsical than Scott's.

Love his book. He is a great person to ask for help. He has even called me in OK to give me help on problems that I had in the past. His book is a must have in my library.

To get back to the topic: If you are wanting to do like the picture oolala should you need to do the design before placing it on the cake. HTH
