It seems that everyone is ordering cookies instead of cakes now. I enjoy making and decorating cookies more than cakes, but the majority of the orders I have done the last 2 months are cookies--big and small. Is this the start of a trend? Most people like the fact that cookies are easy to handle and set up versus having to cut and serve on plates. Even a recent wedding served only cookies and no cake. Just wondering.

This is a strong possibility. Many people have turned to items that are easier to serve - cupcakes, cookies. Not only is it the ease of serving, but the cost of serving a wedding cake - fees for this service have skyrocketed over the past few years. I have heard of venues charging wedding cake serving fees as high as $10 per serving in New York City and Seattle.

In some areas, it costs as much to serve a wedding cake as it does to buy it.

Personally, I think such an exorbitant fee is ridiculous. It costs less than 1 minute to cut a serving, with perhaps 2-3 minutes each to take a tier apart and remove the supports.

I am very glad that I have learned how to serve a wedding cake, so that I can help my family members save on this cost.

I don;t think so.. maybe it's just the occasion..
Cakes are so in and still in. I don't think they will ever go away, inspite of all the health food hype. icon_smile.gif

NO, cookies are just easier for the holiday season. No one wants to be stuck cutting and serving cake. Cookies, peti fours, cake balls and such allow people to serve themselves and the hostess to mingle. I am guessing January is down time and then cakes come back big in February for first wedding rush and then builds for the big bang in Spring and June. Just my observations. Birthdays and weddings never quit coming!!!

Olala.....LOL.....I agree that cakes will not go out. Your "health food" comment makes me giggle though! I'm way into the trans-fat war in my everyday eating, BUT....special occasions are just that and a great reason to splurge!!!! I am interested in this wedding cupcake trend tho~ I'm doing one to serve 300 in June. Now that's alot of cupcakes!

I had way more cookie orders this season than I did cakes, I was noticing the same thing. But as others have stated, the single-serve idea is a big draw for hostesses right now. icon_smile.gif
