I have never eaten or used fondant- therefore I have only used buttercream icing-

It seems that alot of decorators prefer fondant- What does it taste like? Is it leass sweet and buttery than buttercream? Easier to work with?
Do you make your own or buy it ready made?

I know you all will point me in the right direction to figure this out!

Thanks

I did one cake and I tried the fondant and didn't care for the taste at all! I guess it al depends on the person!

Fondant really does not have a taste unless you use the "marshmallow fondant" recipe. Most people like the look of fondant vs the look of butter cream. I like using fondant myself but don't care for the taste.

I hate the taste of fondant and so do most people I know. But it looks so pretty when used.

Maybe you can try the rolled buttercream. I've not tried it yet but hear it tastes like butercream and is much better then fondant.

To me fondant tastes like play do. Some of the better kinds tastes like those orange candy that are shaped like peanuts. YUCK!

The chocolate fondant is wonderful! However, it is costly and is very soft when you work with it. So it can be tricky.

MMF is fantastic to work with. Some people like the taste and others say it's awful, even plastic-like. I use fondant for the people that enjoy it and Buttercream for all the others. You can't beat fondant for control and ease of design, but those with skill can do everything in Buttercream and make it look fantastic! It's all in what you're used to and the amount of skill you have to control the Buttercream.

The only fondant I've ever tried was the Wilton Fondant thumbsdown.gif (pretty nasty tasting)! I have tried Pettinice and Satin Ice. Both taste REALLY good thumbs_up.gif and are fairly easy to work with (tint and roll out the same as you would with fondant).

The only big difference I've found is the texture - buttercream is creamy and fondant is firm. Most of my customers like bitting into a piece of cake that has creamy icing, so most of my experience with fondant is using it as extra elements (see my photos). Just about all the extra elements on my cakes are fondant.

Good luck!

I love the whipped buttercream icing that I use. I've had people order cakes based only on the fact that they know what icing I use. I know fondant is beautiful to look at, but no one I know wants to eat it.

I agree - looks beautiful but tastes nasty. Always ends up in the trash when I use it - everyone picks it off and throws it away - what a waste.

I like the taste and softness of buttercream.

I will only use fondant for accents.

satin ice tastes just like vanilla buttercream to me and it is not chewy like wilton or mmf (although mmf is decent) but it comes at a price! the last few times i've used satin ice, i saw NO ONE take it off (and it was for a large 5 tier cake) even though i expected it because i hear that all the time on here. however, if your only experience is with the yucky wilton kind of course you'll think automatically that fondant is awful. so here's what you do...make a cake with satin ice...and then you pay some dear friend to stand on the table and act like a raving lunatic going on and on about how wonderful the cake is ...ooh and the stuff on top is absolutely amazing....wait is this FONDANT? wow, can i have another slice?" ...then everyone will follow their lead and end up loving your cake simply for the fondant icon_smile.gif (joking of course)

you can also experiment with adding extracts and flavorings to your mmf or even wilton or other brands or recipes.

give a good brand a try and i promise you'll change your mind.

I have used Wilton, Satin Ice and MMF. I think it's a "texture" thing. I flavor my fondant with Tropical Lorann Oil and the little kids at church call it "Miss Beth's bubblegum icing". They don't LIKE it (texture) but that's what they call it! LOLL

Personally, I prefer buttercream and use fondant for the embellishments of a cake. I can get my buttercream ALMOST as smooth as fondant (in fact, it has been mistaken for fondant) and ALL my clients prefer buttercream above fondant. EXCEPT...my aunt, who eats all the fondant embellishments from my cakes! Go Figure! LOLL

PS I have also used Candy Clay to cover a few cakes because I can get the color shade that I need. It tastes better than fondant and has a firmer texture. It worked "okay" but I still prefer buttercream!! Actually I prefer CHOCOLATE buttercream! LOL

Wiltons fondant is nasty tasting. I do love Satin Ice & now that I have my KA I am going to make MMF.
I love butter cream as well. It all depends on what I am doing.
