I need to make a cake for this Friday for a little girl who is 18 years old and in a wheelchair. She had a stroke when she turned 7 and still has difficulty walking and still doesn't speak. Her mother wants something with a girl standing with a wheelchair, but I can not find anything on CC with a wheelchair. She also mentioned that before the stroke, Desiree liked Disney's Little Mermaid. I have the set of toys from the Disney store, and could integrate them into the cake, but I am lost with the wheelchair thing.

Also, the cakes will be feeding approx. 200 people.

Any ideas that anyone has are greatly appreciated!

TIA!

Vicki

This web site has a couple of wheelchair cake toppers. One has a young bride sitting in the wheelchair, very pretty.

I'd print out a picture of a wheelchair from a clip art site, then do a chocolate transfer of it or FBCT. I did one of an antique chair like that and it turned out well and wasn't too difficult. I'm thinking the wheelchair image would work the same.

Is the cake going to be a tiered cake or a sheet cake? If you have some time I would try to construct a simple 3D chair from color flow or royal icing in advance. How about a simple design molded from fondant or modeling chocolate? Best of luck and have fun with it!

My sister's niece was unable to walk and had to use a wheelchair. She really liked the Little Mermaid because "she can't walk either". Since she liked that story, maybe incorporating that into the cake design would be a nice touch.

I am thinking of doing a square tiered cake. I have the square wilton set. I also want to make a stand-up doll cake to look like Desiree.

The more I think about it, I don't think that I want to put a wheelchair on the cake. Her mother thought that it would be a good idea, but I kinda feel like that it is emphasizing the wheelchair rather than her battle to walk again.

That was my first thought too. But what if you left the wheel chair at the bottom of the cake and a figure of her at the top. Kind of like she left it behind and made it to the top by herself.

That's a cute idea, but how do I do the wheelchair?

Have you seen the Cinderella carriage made out of color flow? There is a pattern for it on here in the gallery. What if you put it together like that?

I've never done color flow. Is it difficult?

Color flow is not much different than royal icing. You need to give it a few days to dry, though. If time is a factor, you could use melted CandyMelts. I don't know if you could buy a small wheelchair at a toy store or a store that carries miniatures?

I wanted to thank you all for your ideas and help on this cake.

Unfortunately, I received a call from DH telling me that the mother had called him and the event was cancelled. icon_mad.gificon_mad.gif

I stayed up until 11:30 last night baking and ended up coming home from work sick today because of that, and now the cake is cancelled!! icon_cry.gificon_mad.gif

On the upside of this, I needed a 2 layer 16" chocolate cake for next week, so I guess I am ahead of the game now. icon_lol.gif
