Ok I was just wondering, when you make a castle cake, and you are trying to achieve the look of rocks for the walls, and you use buttercream icing, and tip number 12, do you just simply pipe round dots, and then smooth them when they crust a little? Do you do a crumb coat first, or is that not necessary? Sorry for the questions, just a very important cake for two little girls!!

I ususally run out to my local candy shop and get chocolate rocks. They look so real and save a lot of time. If you dont find them or are pressed for time...take royal icing and drop round rocks on a sheet of wax paper. Roll them in sanding sugar (take your regular colored sugar and grind until really fine) and roll and press gently into funky shapes. I use a brown/black mix to get rock like colors. This looks so pretty too on a cake..like rocks that have been rained on.

HOpe this helps.

I would definitely do a crumb coat first in the color of the grout that goes between the rocks as it were. That way all you have to do is pipe the "rocks" on top of the crumb coat (not having to worry bout getting the cake all covered, it already is with the crumb coat) and that would make it more realistic looking when you pipe on the "rocks" in a "rocky"color, I think that makes sense.
