I tried to work on tinting mmf black it starte tearing and i made it thick enough to cover the cake but it looks horrible it doesn' t look smooth. I know I had to add alot of black but what could i have done to avoid getting it so ugly and tearing?
Did you color your MMF whilst making it .....?? I like to add my color when I've melted the marshmallows ....Once it is made, if it is not dark enough i just have to add a little color, then it doesn't change the consistency of the MMF......maybe you could have made chocolate mmf then added black. I find if you start with a dark color MMF then add black it is much easier and you don't need as much color....hope this helps
I had similar situation as your's and my solution was to buy a pre-made black SatinIce fondant. It helped me to cut down the time and reduce my stress meter ![]()
When I need black MMF, I do what torki suggested and start with chocolate MMF first. I substitute cocoa powder for some of the powder sugar and add some black dye to that. It seems to work for me. HTH
Okay great, so when I am in the middle of melting it and making it soupy, I add the color while also adding cocoa powder instead? Will the cocoa powder change the consistecy? Or how do I make chocolate MMF? Thank you so much!!!!
Just add the cocoa after you melt the marshmellows and before you add the powdered sugar. If you can find the Hershey's Special Dark cocoa it makes the MMF black with little or no color added! The cocoa does not change the consistency of the MMF, but you do need to adjust how much powdered sugar that you use. HTH and good luck!
The trick is to add chocolate to your marshmallow mixture, stir that in until it's brown, and then start adding black. You use a lot less color that way and it makes life much easier! I use a square of unsweetened chocolate - I haven't tried the cocoa powder but I heard it works well also! all the photos with black fondant in My Photos were made this way, and I really like the way the black turned out. It tasted good too, because of the chocolate!
